Christ's words in context are dealing with the separation that will come between brother and sister, mother and father, even husband and wife, as it relates to His word and not the use of an actual sword. This is evidenced by Matthew 10:35-40. This verse is misused by 'conservatives' about as much as Christ's directions in Luke 22:36. The sword in that instance is a sword not of this world as well

I won't even justify that statement with an answer as Christ told us what to do to those that would hate us, and the attitude of turning the other cheek. As to your statement on the disciple, what did Christ do and say when the disciple actually used that sword? Oh yes...
51 And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest's, and smote off his ear.
52 Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.--Matthew 26:51-52
