Shhhhh. We want them to stay away.

Yeah really, we've got enough carpet baggers who move here and then do nothing but complain. I'm with you guys though, I love Atlanta.

You could not pay me enough to live in Atlanta. We have had to go there for medical reasons but we have not been there in a number of years.

Going to a city for a medical convention is far different than living in that city. The problem in this thread is that people are naively equating their tourist experience in a particular city to what it would be like to actually live there.

As with any city, visiting for a vacation or a conference is a far different experience. Do you think that people in DC take the White House tour everyday or people in NY go to Madison Square Garden everyday?

As I pointed out, there is a 40 mile band of upper middle class wealth that spans from Marietta, Roswell, Alpharetta, Suwanee, Duluth and Lawrenceville that those here for a convention or the SEC championship game never see. We have very nice homes with nice yards in neighborhoods that are beautifully landscaped for prices that are very comparable to the much smaller cities in the south.

These suburbs are mostly self sufficient and many of us never even have to fight the traffic. We live in the same suburb that we work in and only fight traffic while going to a entertainment event.

ha. And what they don't tell you is that it is either extremely wealthy people who made their money usually somewhere other than Santa Fe and poor people. And not much else in between.

And going into the bordering little towns -- is pretty much putting your life at risk via gang violence.

Beautiful setting though.

Agreed. While most people from other areas of the country love it here, those from Chicago, San Fransisco and Hawaii hate it here and complain constantly - yet they remain here. Usually the person has lived in all three places.

People from other places take to Atlanta and really like it. New Yorkers and those from New Jersey have a great time and make it their home. Same for those from the Ohio, Michigan and Florida.

I still would not live there. HSV is plenty big enough for all that we do. The TN River is nearby for hubby's bass fishing, he goes to a good golf course which is about 1 or 1 1/2 miles from the house and there are plenty of restaurants to chose from. I hate traffic and there is plenty of that here. I read an article in our paper which said that by 2010?, this area would have over 1,000,000 people. I can see that happening with all the new houses going up and all the companies coming to town. Our shopping is within a few miles, the hospital is about 2 miles from the house, and our church is within a mile. We do not go to night clubs, etc. By the time hubby gets home from work he is ready to stay home. I am the same way. My hobbies are crocheting, counted cross stitch, genealogy, reading and the Internet.

"City folks lose their souls to materialism. Anyone who says it isn't true, is lying. The fast pace leaves them wanting for more, but sadly, they seem to find solice in the big department stores, restaurants and what they call "parks". Parks, trees surrounded by asphalt. I'd laugh but it really is sad."

Nothing a little broad-brush generalization can't cure, I'm sure.

I'm saying it isn't true. And I'm not lying.

You know what? I think you're right. I will honestly admit that my disdain for city life has perhaps clouded my judgement along with my own personal experiences with people I know who live in the city. My observations have been that their lives seem to be focused more on money and prestige, rather than....well, the simpler joys in life.

I should not have painted all city dwellers with the same broad-brush generalizations. And I'm not lying. :)

Thanks for calling me on it. Bad chena.
