New Mexico Congressman Steve Pearce says he plans to draft a bill that would create a guest worker program for immigrants but prohibit amnesty for those who come to the country illegally. The legislation would add to a growing stack of bills in Congress dealing with immigration.
The New Mexico Republican just finished a tour of southern New Mexico.
He says he spoke with many constituents who want immigrants to be able to work in the U-S but who don't believe a guest worker permit should become a path to citizenship.
He says that regardless of the particular form that a guest worker program takes, the fact remains that the economy needs immigrants.
He also says New Mexico faces a crisis on the border -- and the time for action has arrived.

He's regurgitating the GWBush party line on illegal immigrant amnesty. This takes zero brain power.

Yet another Republican who isn't listening... I think the GOP is in trouble next year...
Whatever guest worker program is enacted, (and there will be one) it will probably involve a social security totalization agreement with Mexico.
When these "guest workers" retire back to Mexico, they will then be eligible to collect U.S Social Security...for life.
This is going to be a huge drain on S.S. funds.

Congressman Pearce, you're about 5 years too late. My County Sheriff sat before a House subcommittee 5 years ago and told those esteemed gentlemen (and ladies) that action on the border was required.

"I oppose amnesty, placing undocumented workers on the automatic path to citizenship. Granting amnesty encourages violation of our laws and perpetuates illegal immigration. America is a welcoming country, but citizenship must not be the automatic reward for violating the laws of America."
President G.W. Bush, Jan. 7, 2004

The U.S.-Mexico Totalization Agreement Closer To Going Before Congress

They had better get proactive on the illegals otherwise if people get mad enough, they might even vote for a stinking socialist...which would be tragic. I would like to see a STRONG ANTI-INCUMBENT REPUB vote. Maybe these career country-club Washington-crats might get the message (just maybe...)
I cannot support any program that does not require the border jumpers to go home to apply.

Slave labor has always been a popular way to compete. Having non-voting serfs as your vassals means you never have to worry about them voting to change the conditions of their employment under law.
Unfortunately, the other folks who aren't competing that way usually get a bit frosted by the whole thing and the unstable situation devolves to nasty little things like civil wars.
The fact is, like it or not, we're going to have to accept some kind of guest worker program along with tougher border security.
I don't like it, you don't like it, but both the major Senate immigration bills provide for massive amounts of guest workers.
There DOES appear to be political willingness to improve border security, which is why I think we should concentrate on border walls and the like. That way, at least we could ensure that we can deport the criminals, drunk drivers and syphillis patients and that they won't be able to easily return.
This is an emergency and we are in a crisis.
thanks for the link to that article on totalization
NP sir.
But it is not clear that either of these can be passed in the House.

Kennedy- McCain has the best chance of passing.
Because the compromise AgJobs amendment to the supplemental spending bill recieved 53 votes in the senate, it would follow that Kennedy-McCain would pass the senate. Frist and Cornyn will not allow it on the floor.
In the House, it is not so clear. In late 03 and early 04, Kennedy-McCain might have passed the House. Whatever support there is for it now, House leadership will not allow it onto the floor.
Its a Mexican Stand-off.
Good! They are both awful laws that will flood the country with poor people that the taxpayers will be required to subsidize while the open borders business lobby laughs all the way to the bank.
I'm not sure the old votes on the Ag bill in the Senate are representative of what would happen now. There's been a lot of public outrage in recent months- a lot of voters have called their Senators. Hillary and a few other prospective candidates want to look tough on immigration. Not saying there definitely is hope, but maybe there is.
More awful than the way it is now?
