Apocalypse Not (Vietnam vs. Iraq)
Investor's Business Daily ^ | Tuesday, August 23, 2005 | IBD

The War: Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel has a point when he says he finds Iraq similar to our experience in Vietnam. Then, as now, the enemy enjoys untouched sanctuaries while the media fawn over war protesters.

<snip>

Having fought in Vietnam, Hagel should be aware that, if we were bogged down there, it was because the enemy enjoyed privileged sanctuaries from which it could be resupplied and rearmed. He should also know that South Vietnam ultimately fell not to a popular uprising, but to a conventional, armored invasion from North Vietnam two years after we left, and only after Congress cut off aid. Iraq is Vietnam, but only in the sense media report casualties and not progress, focusing on a single anti-war protestor, not on democracy taking root.

<snip>

The jihadist hope is that, as in Vietnam, ambivalent politicians and a biased media will help them win a war not on the battlefield, but in our newspapers and on the floor of Congress.

I heard somewhere that Hagel is thinking of a run for the presidency, but he can't believe this will help him.

Too bad for the media/left; GWB is going to be president until January 20, 2009, and his 'voice' is the only one that counts.

Boy, is this article on target! Hagel's remarks were embarrassingly foolisih and inaccurate. Only because we have a left wing media and docile conservatives, is he not driven from the Senate. He showed astounding ignorance and poor judgement, and his remarks bordered on lunacy. I think his head is a good place to keep his hair on. I wouldn't let him be our town dogcatcher (if we have one).

I missed that, but I heard him play the President's remarks regarding Cindy Sheehan. It was about time!
