Woodbridge Police Chief William Trenery said Sexton had been investigating an animal-cruelty complaint when he called township police for assistance in making an arrest.

Under what authority? There's no indication in the article that the guy was a sworn LEO of any description. It would be kind of important to know...

Ciardiello said she plans to file a complaint about the incident with authorities today. She and her husband, Robert, said they are planning a lawsuit.

I hope that lawsuit includes a righteous butt-kicking for the EX-cop who thinks he's still King S*** of Turd Mountain.

Oh gosh I am so sorry for this woman and her husband not to mention their beloved dog Rusti. What the hell was the matter with this guy anyway? How come he doesn't look for KIDS left in cars? This sounds way over the edge and I believe this woman in how she said this all happened. This "officer" should be held accountable for harrasment and...negligence as he scared this woman not knowing who he was and caused the death of her dog. HE IS RESPONSIBLE IN THIS CASE...NO ONE ELSE!!! I hope they sue the living daylights out of him. He obviously has a background that proves he has no business in any poisition of autority. NONE!

She screamed. Several people stood nearby, she said, but no one stopped him. "I kept saying, "Help me, help me, I don't know this man,' " she said.

What a town. :( How can you just stand there with someone yelling help while being manhandled?

If you make a citizen's arrest, which is the only kind the ex-cop would be allowed to make, you may not use active force to stop someone. The ex-cop should immediately be charged with assault and battery for pulling her out of the car, reckless endangerment, criminal negligence, etc.

Somebody's going to prison.
I hear they love "cops" there.

All because of a king-s**t cop. I hope they sue him and his dept. for everything they can get.

This is the kind of bovine excrement that happens when you try to give cops the authority to enforce all sorts of ninny nanny-state crap like leaving dogs in cars for ten minutes.

Next they'll be brutally beating smokers.

Sexton was fired from the department in 1995 after a locker-room skirmish in which he attempted to arrest a superior officer.

This dude has some real issues... Poor people.

And Rusti, the collie-shepherd mix that Ciardiello and her husband refer to as their daughter

Ughhh...

This guy sounds like one pathetic loser on a crazy power trip. He isn't even a cop anymore and he's trying to arrest people for what he thinks is animal cruelty. This township needs to make the message very clear to this guy: "You are not a cop...you're just an idiot, who is now going to get sued"

Never thought I'd say it, but the cops in this country are criminals.

All I've ever said is that police work draws a lot of people who are themselves criminals, with the exception being that they're too chickenshit to be a *real* criminal.

Being a policeman is the next best thing.

It's a very poorly written article on the question of whether he is a police officer or not. He was fired from the local police years ago. At one point, when he shoves his victim against the car, the reporter calls him "state Department of Human Services Police Officer Stephen Sexton."

I don't know what the hell that means. Evidently he is not a regular state police officer, but some sort of security person attached to the Department of Human Services. I don't know why that gives him jurisdiction to arrest a citizen for having a dog in her car.

Anyone listen to Phil Hendrie? This guy reminds me of Jay Santos, Brigadier Admiral in the "Citizens Auxiliary Police"
