In the 1600s it used to be a common punishment to dunk nagging wives in the village pond, so keeping the little lady in line through coersion isn't all that new.

Just goes to show you, in some ways the Muslims aren't really nine centuries behind us in societal development. They're only four centuries or so.

Of course, this story comes from one of the more "enlightened" Saudis... who realizes it's only ok to beat your wife when she doesn't listen; something I think all moderate wife-beaters can agree on.

Silly! It isn't like Islam says it is OK to beat your wife right off the bat! You have to go through escalation procedures first.

Beating is only a last resort. What could be more peaceful?

I have a loaded gun in my house (actually I have LOTS of guns in the house, but only one is loaded and stored with extra speed loaders). I have shown my wife where it is. We go to the range and practice together occasionally; she enjoys it.

If I EVER beat her, I expect her to use it on me. It will be self defense and a justifiable homicide.

Yep, that's what the phrase refers to. I think it's an Irish/Celtic thing.

A great line in one of the best films ever made, The Quiet Man, was (old woman in crowd following John Wayne as he drags Maureen O'Hara back to her brother's house to either return her as spoiled goods or get the dowry owed): "Sir, sir! Here's a stick to beat the nice lady." Then she curtseys and returns to the crowd.

Ok, I guess this is where I have to admit that I beat my wife regularly .........







I beat her to the last piece of pie, the last BBQ rib, the last of the ice cubes for a cold drink, the last cold drink, the last of the chips and dip, and, of course, the last of the Mylanta.

I hate to admit it but, even though we're coming up on 39 years of marriage, I will still have to beat her mercilessly concerning these things.

P.S. I should have robbed a bank, I'd have been a free man in probably 3-7 years!
