WASHINGTON — A Pentagon secret intelligence team identified 9/11 leader Mohamed Atta through a probe of blind Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman — the mastermind of the first attempt to destroy the World Trade Center, it was revealed yesterday.

An outside contractor to the intelligence unit, code named Able Danger, has told congressional staffers Atta's name was discovered by a computer data-mining search of connections to Abdel-Rahman, the Muslim cleric in prison for inspiring the 1993 trade center bombing and a plot to blow up New York landmarks.

Contractor James D. Smith testified that a California researcher was later able to purchase Atta's photograph from an Islamic Web site, officials confirmed.

That was one of the things that bothered me after 9-11. Where did the FBI get all the pictures AND the historical timeline which they posted a couple of days after 9-11.

Senator Specter's congressional staff. They're preparing for hearings in September to try to give the 9/11 Committee some cover prior to their public meeting on 9/12. Ms. Gorlick and the 9/11 Committee don't want to be asked about Able Danger in their 9/12 meeting which is open to the public and will be televised on CSPAN. This is where these NY Post leaks are coming from.

IF you want to find rats go to the garbage dump that breeds them..If most of the Able Danger story is told many in DC will be destroyed..so don't expect DOD/DOJ to find any evidence supporting AD. If A Spector holds senate hearings we will get the" Magic bullet" from his past expertise with the Warren commission..lets hope C Weldon can put a spot light on the AD and 9/11 commission..time will tell.

If they linked Atta to the planners of the first WTC bombing, then they also linked him to Iraqi intelligence, which supported the logistics of the first WTC bombing.

Yep! I think that is the next bombshell to come out of Able Danger -- the link to Iraq; yet another reason why the 9/11 commission burried the information. They did not want the results of their commission to be used to justify the Iraq War, weather it was true or not. Looking forward to the upcoming hearings on this program.

Senate hearings in September. Their afraid of what might happen at the 9/11 Commission public meeting scheduled on 9/12/05 in Washington, DC. They're trying to protect Gorelick who is supposed to be a part of that meeting.

Once again Senator Specter defies the public interest to support the Washington insiders who bashed the Bush administration and protected the Clinton administration using the 9/11 report as the vehicle. Specter and the 9/11 O-Mission members do want the TRUTH to come before the public. They are in a panic as they realize truth may happen in Washington.

Good question. One might also wonder how the feds had all the info on OKC immediately afterwards and knew just who to pick up and who to ignore.
