What about “Absolute Moral Responsibility,” Ms. Sheehan?
Kerry Country ^ | 8/24/05 | ltn72

Writer Maureen Dowd, presumably while being driven to the office in her chauffeured limousine, recently dictated to her onboard secretary that parents whose children have been killed in battle have an “absolute moral authority” regarding anything they say or demand about the war being waged. Despite their childrens’ having repeatedly volunteered for combat duty. Even if that means the President of the United States must jump up during a Cabinet meeting and rush off to (again) hold the hand and listen respectfully to a deranged, life-long America- and Israel-hater who is holding court on a dusty roadside, standing upon the rhetorical coffin of her dead son, accompanied by The Usual Suspect Gang of 60s gray-ponytailed radicals, chic Hollywood millionaires, Starbucks Marxists, and the under-educated twits that pass for “journalists” these days at New York Times and Washington Post. Apparently unconcerned that 79% of America says Deranged Anti-American Women do not speak for them, the marketers of the Left are now encouraging this sideshow to move to Washington after the president returns there at the end of the month. Thus we have the modern Left: 20% of the people insisting they are 60% of the people and that they exercise 100% of the ether’s moral authority. Somewhere, Lenin is smiling.

As with all things Left, such claims of having absolute authority are simply lies. Aside from the inconvenient fact that the Left bases most of its “authority” upon deeds of OTHER people, it also completely misses the boat regarding responsibility. There can be no authority without an equal, coexistent responsibility. And responsibility for construction is something the Left has always refused to accept or even acknowledge for itself.

I graduated from college in the late 60s – that halcyon period so enshrined by the Left. Yes, the 60s were something, all right. My class entered college in a time of freshman beanies, student curfews, football rallies, and an unabashed reverence for the bronze statue outside the Student Union: The Minuteman, musket at the ready, guarding our freedoms. When I graduated and left for Navy flight training, times had changed: bra-burnings, all night parties (and the random impregnations and swapping of STDs that has become a national disgrace of rampant VD, teen pregnancy, and abortion through the fourth trimester), radical feminism, and a spittle-flying hatred of the US military which might interrupt one’s selfish life with the demand that someone enjoying the fruits of American life give several years back. Of course, it only got worse, so much so that during the next ten years my college went from the academic excellence of retiring undefeated on TV’s “College Bowl” to becoming a sick joke – a place where students were admitted upon the basis of their being “oppressed,” their coursework replaced by Bachelors’ Degrees with Individual Concentration (i.e. four years of parties and anti-military rallies, led by my former classmates who had returned as hard Left assistant professors) or a degree in that wonderful oxymoron “Feminist Anthropology,” and where the ROTC building was burned to the ground by hate-filled, cheering thugs impersonating students. Anyone who received a degree in “education” from my school from 1968 until the 1980s stole the taxpayers’ money and graduated with absolutely no professional qualifications. An angry demand by what had come to pass for students at my college to tear-down the Minuteman statue as being “racist, sexist, and war-mongering” was defeated only when alums – finally roused from their sleep by the publicity -- threatened to shut-off the money faucet.

Missing in this explosion of “self-discovery,” “sticking it to the Man,” “Power to the people!” “If it feels good, do it,” and “Viva Che’!” was any hint of taking responsibility for one’s actions. Nor has this changed since the 1960s. Then, getting the US out of Vietnam was its own reward, period, and what about “responsibility”? After the US pulled the plug on South Vietnam, an estimated two-and-a-half million Vietnamese and Cambodians were slaughtered by the victorious Communists while the Left put its fingers in its ears, shut its eyes, and, like a 5-year-old having a tantrum, yelled, “La La La, Can’t hear you!” to drown-out the shrieks of the former US allies in Southeast Asia being shot, stabbed, hacked to death, drowned, suffocated, and pushed through industrial shredders so as to “re-educate the masses.” Heck, the war was over and America had lost! What in the world did the Left have to listen to?

Thirty years later and a career Leftist whose son enraged her by twice enlisting in the US military has, for the moment, taken her fingers out of her ears long enough use them to clamber up onto a soapbox alongside a dusty Texas road and, with the excited help of the Dinosaur Media that has bestowed upon her “absolute moral authority,” demand that President Bush pull out of an Iraq liberated by the US and thus spared the same happy fate as their cousins in Vietnam and other SE Asian garden spots -- continuing hell holes of torture, deprivation, and the institutionalized insanity that is totalitarianism. Was invading Iraq good for Iraq? Ask several million Iraqis who live there. Was invading Iraq necessary? People of good faith will argue that for years. But not the Left. Only their point of view is valid. After all, ‘Bush Lied!’

And now The Oracle of Crawford announces to the fawning nitwits at the New York Times and Boston Globe that she is “…coming back to Crawford for my son... as long as the president, who sent him to die in a senseless war [for the Zionist Occupation Government and for Bush’s oil buddies] is [also] in Crawford…” Rather than be pitied as a bitter woman who has long hated the US and has now lost her mind, she will continue to be the center of the Get Bush Show… until she either goes so bonkers that she starts wearing a tin foil hat, eating kitty litter with a soup spoon right out of the bag, and screaming that the Jewish Space Aliens are controlling our minds with their Thought Control Rays, or until an even more sensational fiction comes along to displace her as the Left’s newest weapon.

In Iraq, there are no more labs and scientists dedicated to the quick construction of WMDs (those in the country having been spirited away while the dictatorships at the UN dithered and gave them plenty of time to get rid of the evidence). In Iraq, the people are creating a republic, warts and all, and a lot more quickly than did the USA, which dumped its first Articles of Confederation and then took another four years to write and ratify a Constitution after the end of the Revolutionary War. Meanwhile, the Left has its fingers back in its ears while screaming that it wants what it wants, and don’t bother us with being responsible for the consequences.

abortion through the fourth trimester

Kudos for a clever phrase.

As Ann Coulter wrote last week, the problem with Mo Dowd's anointing Cinderblock with "absolute moral authority" is that it is reckless rhetoric, which is usually what comes when the left starts using terms they don't understand, like "absolute" and "moral."

I get tired of hearing about 'kids in combat.' You'd think they are sending 10 year olds over to fight or something.

In America, when a boy turns eighteen he becomes a man and it becomes the time in his life when he needs to make decisions as a man. And we should treat those decisions as such. No one (at least with half of a brain) goes into the military thinking that they'd never get sent off to war. Cindy Sheehan's son was a man, and a fine one at that, who made the adult decision to join the military. Quit talking about him like he was a child. He was not. He's far more an adult than his mother is.

Great article that says it all. Leftists are very immoral people. It's noteworthy that no crisis or disaaster is occurring in Iraq to merit discussing giving up. Leftists are just demanding that we stop being there, that we get out now and they don't care what happens to the Iraqis or us as a consequence. The left is really protesting the success of the operation.

No wonder Casey Sheehan joined the service and then Reenlisted, he was trying to get away from his crazy mother.

There are too many good lines to quote in here. This article is great.

I don't follow what is going on with this woman too much, I think she is getting entirely too much coverage.

I wonder if this woman would say the same if it were a liberal president in office?

I also wonder what was said in letters to her son by Cindy. Were they supportive or did she try to tear him down for being in the military?

I've come to realize that this is why affluence destroys cultures. Affluence gives people the ability to shirk their responsibilities and be completely and horribly wrong about anything and everything without it being instantly fatal. In a less affluent society, such people would be Darwin Award winners, killed by their own mistakes or abandoned by everyone because they are deadbeats. In an affluent society of plenty, they manage to survive comfortably to drone on and on about how they need to be given another chance until the quantity of leaches exceeds the carrying capacity of their culture. By then, it's too late and their culture vanishes, only to be replaced by another that still hasn't been spoiled by affluence.

Wait a minute, it's the RAT-bastard left that proclaims, "there ARE no absolutes" (except the statement itself, which is self-referential, and they can't comprehend that anyway). And the use of the word, "moral"? Whatever happened to their lovely gray shades of nuance?
