I helped a little copperhead get off the Katy Trail (bike/hike trail crossing Missouri from St. Charles to Clinton). I must say he was NOT amused, but he didn't bite anyone and was not turned into road pizza. The branch I used was ten feet long and I was ready to run the other way. Safty first!
