SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - Congressional candidate Jim Gilchrist, promoter of citizen patrols along the U.S.-Mexico border to thwart illegal immigration, cannot use "Minuteman movement founder" as his ballot designation. ~snip~
The secretary of state's office rejected any designation for Gilchrist that included the words "Minuteman" or "Minutemen," Gilchrist campaign manager Howie Morgan said. Morgan said the decision will hurt the retired accountant's chances with voters.

If Gilchrist wants to create a party and name it the Minuteman party, who has the authority to remove that designation?

cannot use "Minuteman movement founder" as his ballot designation. Other candidates usually use titles such as "businessman" instead of "founder of such and such company," so maybe "Minuteman movement" is too specific?

In addition to rejecting the Gilchrist "Minuteman" designation, the California Secretary of State's office said Thursday that Republican candidate Edward A. Suppe cannot use "veteran/international businessman" on the ballot, spokeswoman Nghia Nguyen Demovic said.
Gilchrist would have to put down the occupation he served in prior to starting the Minutemen--IOW, what he's been doing for the last decade or two.
The elections code allows ballot designations for identification so candidates can inform voters of their "principal profession, vocation or occupation."
If you were an international businessman, wouldn't "international businessman" be your principal profession, vocation or occupation?
