Man shot dead at Wal-Mart, Shopper saw him stabbing ex-wife in deli
By Megan Arredondo Tribune Reporter August 26, 2005
A Wal-Mart employee is recovering from stab wounds while her ex-husband is dead from gunshot wounds after the couple fought inside the Southeast Heights store.
While working in the deli, Joyce Cordoba, 46, was approached by Felix Vigil around 5 p.m. Thursday, Albuquerque police spokeswoman Trish Hoffman said this morning.
The divorced couple have a history of domestic violence, Hoffman said.
Vigil, 54, jumped over the deli counter and began to stab Cordoba, Hoffman said.
Due Moore, a customer who witnessed the stabbing, pulled out a gun a shot Vigil dead, Hoffman said.
Moore, 72, had a concealed arms permit and was an unpaid volunteer with the Police Department's cold case unit, Hoffman said.
Moore was taken into custody Thursday, questioned and released, she said.
"It looks like it will be justified," Hoffman said.
Cordoba was taken to University of New Mexico Hospital with multiple stab wounds and is in serious but stable condition, Hoffman said.
Sharon Weber, a spokeswoman for Wal-Mart, said "our first and foremost concern is for our associates."
The store at 301 San Mateo Blvd. S.E., reopened a little after 7 a.m. today, Weber said.
She said the company's thoughts and prayers are with Cordoba and that counseling is available.
Weber said the shooting and stabbing are being looked at as an isolated incident.
The victim likely would have been killed except for Moore's intervention.
That is one way to curb domestic violence.
Gee Yah Think? What a Maroon!
Woman being stabbed 72 year old with CHL and also a police volunteer stops stabbing, woman will recover. What prosecutor in their right mind would even contemplate bringing charges? At least in New Mexico. In some places they'd get the guy for discharge of a firearm within the city limits.
That said, I'll bet it was a bloody mess behind that deli counter. Ugh.
Excellent gun control. No bystanders hit.

Bravo for Moore. He prvented the woman's death and put the ex-husband where he won't be hurting anybody again.
For those that don't know, a couple years ago a similar thing happened in a Wal-Mart. Crazy with a knife stabbing people and a person with a CCW stopped them. A lady customer was interviewed afterward and all she could talk about was how it was wrong that that person had a gun and that it was very upsetting to her. Not a word about the people injured. Just upset about the gun.
"The victim likely would have been killed except for Moore's intervention."
The victim should be VERY grateful to the gentleman who jumped in and saved her.
IMHO, she should also be grateful it happened while she was employed at Wal-Mart, instead of say....Starbucks....
The shooter saved 30% by purcahsing the ammunition at Wal Mart.
ping
How long before Moore is sued by someone??
ACLU will open its hole very soon!!
Cheapest place to buy Winchester ball ammunition for pretty much any caliber.
Defensive gun use...PING! Gotta love the 2nd Amendment cuz you know jihadis and criminals don't.
I wonder what that's supposed to mean. They think this guy Moore runs around shooting people all the time?
I can see the commercial now:
"Watch for falling perps"
Hopefully, Walmart won't turn PC and fire her for allowing herself to get stabbed in front of an armed bystander.
If he was in New York City he would be in jail for a long time. That is why I do not go to New York.
Gun saves innocent life. Will this be hitting the national news? In a "Wal-Mart" search, CNN only shows the recent whacko shooting two employees, same for CBS, nothing at MSNBC. Fox is the only one carrying this.
Isn't that normal for first reports, the first responders are almost always the idiotic, moronic left that have so much crocodillian concern for the perps?
Makes a person desire to "bitch slap" these dumb butts!
