WHEELING -- Ohio County Sheriff Tom Burgoyne is calling Interstate 70 the "artery of illegal aliens" after 18 illegals were taken into custody following a traffic stop early Thursday.
Burgoyne said the stop was made at about 1:45 a.m. Thursday near exit 4 of Interstate 70 after the driver of a 1999 GMC van was stopped for traveling 12-miles-per- hour over the speed limit. The deputy spoke to the driver, but the driver could not speak English, and the deputy then found the remaining passengers in the back.
Burgoyne said the illegal aliens were traveling to New York, and a 17-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy were among those taken into custody.
U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service was called to the scene and took 13 of the illegal aliens into custody. The remaining five were initially transported to the Northern Regional Jail, but they were picked up by INS later that day.
Burgoyne said 64 illegal aliens have been taken into custody by the Ohio County Sheriff's Department since May, and he commended his deputies for making many stops involving illegal aliens.
"We have caught them east to west and west to east," Burgoyne said.
"I credit to deputies for being alert. There are no other sheriff's offices in Ohio and Pennsylvania doing what we are doing here. It (I-70) is the artery of the illegal alien as far as I am concerned. This is just a 14-mile stretch. This is a microcosm of the problem nationwide. I don't see these large arrests coming out of Zanesville or other cities along the interstate. We have told the deputies to stay alert. I think INS knows our guys on a first-name basis."
Burgoyne said there is a potential for a number of illegal aliens in Ohio County because of the number of construction projects in the area. Burgoyne said he is asking for the public to report any illegal aliens found residing or working in the area.
"I have discussed the potential problem in the building and trades industry," he said. "If we learn of them working we are going to pay the construction site a visit and talk with the contractor involved and remove them from the site. I think the people who employ the illegals should be penalized also."

If a US Citizen attacked, he'd be prosecuted under the patriot act. I guess the illegals just dont appreciate the free trip back home on the dime of that US Citizen.
from your link:
After the incident, 17 people were apprehended for illegally crossing the border, and two of them were being investigated for smuggling. Ten immigrants evaded capture.
Isn't that great. Ten of the little rock throwers are now free in the USA.
I know this sounds good and I think the sheriff should keep it up, however, I'm sure once ICE got them they just gave them a court date and asked them politely to return for their hearing.
The ACLU will have him fired for profiling in a heartbeat.
This guy is a national hero--he should be president, considering President Bush refuses to defend our national sovereignty.
"Ah, me go newyork, vote hillary..."
Grasping at straws is all that keeps me going. I need all the hope I can get so I'm choosing to believe that they've be deported and won't ever be coming back. :)
Here come the Men In Black.
Whoops, wrong aliens.
You really hit on something.
You are damn right. These sherrifs should start rounding these illegal aliens up and shackle them to the fence at the White House (or at the Capitol Bldg.), and wait for Bush and the Sentors to come out and deal with them.
Imagine the scene with cameras rolling and reporters yacking.
You are right. This will work. We need to get our do nothing president and Senators in front of national cameras to dramatize how they have abandoned the defense of our national sovereignty.
