Bush May Bow in Immigration Policy

PHOENIX — Struggling to pacify his party's warring wings, President Bush is moving toward allowing illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. before February 2004 to qualify for guest-worker visas. People smuggled in after then would be deported.

State leaders in Arizona and New Mexico have stepped up pressure on the Bush administration and the Republican-led Congress to better police U.S. borders and deal with an estimated 10 million people who are living illegally in this country.

"They're trying to split the baby," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said of the White House plan, "and I don't think they can do that."

Anyone know what it is that McCain wants to do?

Thank God for House conservatives, otherwise the White House and Senate would be left alone to run this country.

"Struggling to pacify his party's warring wings"

The only struggle I see is between the people and the government.

The Prez is going to deport (well) over a million illegals? I'll believe it when I see it. And anyway, how can the Feds determine when exactly illegals made their border cross? "Oh si senor, I came over in 2003. Donde esta mi worker visa?"

I searched, but the different title threw me off.

In any case, it doesn't appear that Bush's "compromise" is much of an improvement.

Shellgame.

It still gets the amnesty (by any name) pushed through, and that has been GW's goal since he was elected in 2000.

How many millions came in illegally from Jan 20, 2001, and Jan 31, 2005?

This issue could sink the Republican majorities in the House and Senate, starting in 06 and continuing in 08 by handing all 3 -- House, Senate, and Presidency -- to the Dems.

Yeah.

Be the VP for Hillary or Kerry in 2008 (that is if the men with butterfly nets don't snag him before then.)

Lol...

How much more smoke would the Prez like to blow up our wazoo?

Now he's just plain prevaricating (pssst, to all the Bots out there, that's "LYING".)

Amnesty for Illegals in 2005=Hillary in 2008

If Bush gets his way, I fear that we'll all be crying our eyes out in January 2009.

Mr President, we love you and respect you but you need to remember that we are the ones who hired you. You have to do what you feel is right but you also have to honor the will of the people as well.

No one who has made felonious entry into the US should ever qualify for a guest worker permit.

And...guest worker permits should only be made available upon application in person in the worker's home country.

This is exactly what was done in the first federal amnesty, which is at the root of most of the problems today. If you give amnesty to one group of illegals, it only encourages more illegals in the future. Especially when the liberals and Democrat politicians have a vested interest in putting illegals on the voter rolls.

I understand that it's extremely important for Bush and the Republicans not to offend Spanish American citizens and drive them back into the Democrat camp, where they would reverse recent gains for conservatives. But amnesty is not the way to go. It amounts to giving a seal of approval to criminal behavior.

Don't everyone be so quick to dismiss this Bush plan. If he truly can deport all illegals here after February 2004, that is a very good thing and will send a strong message.

Plus, there is a very important paragraph in this article:

"In a nod to his conservative base, however, the president has rejected a part of the McCain-Kennedy bill that the White House believes would put illegal immigrants on an automatic track to citizenship, the officials said."

Just make sure we defeat Mckennedy, and then make sure that these laws are enforced and promises made good.
