PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President Bush, as he readied the federal government for a massive relief effort, on Sunday urged people in the path of Hurricane Katrina to forget anything but their safety and move to higher ground as instructed.

"We cannot stress enough the danger this hurricane poses to Gulf Coast communities," Bush said as the storm roared across the gulf toward New Orleans and other communities. "I urge all citizens to put their own safety and the safety of their families first by moving to safe ground."

With forecasters warning of a category five storm, the president made sure the federal response would not be delayed by already declaring emergencies in Mississippi and Florida just hours after a similar declaration for Louisiana. Such declarations make federal aid available to assist with disaster relief, but they are rarely made before a storm even hits.

Working from his Texas ranch, Bush participated via videoconference in a large meeting of federal, state and local disaster management officials preparing for the storm's onslaught. Separately, he spoke by phone with the governors of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

The President also spok about Iraq and asked the nation for patience regarding the Iraq War as the Iraqis work toward ratification of their constitution.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The President's schedule is subject to change due to Hurricane Katrina. As of now, his schedule remains as announced. President Bush will stop in Arizona on his way to Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino County, Clifornia on Monday. In both states, GWB will discuss a new Medicare reform program.

On Tuesday, President Bush will deliver a speech at North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego, California. The speech will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Japanese surrender aboard the battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay on Sept. 2, 1945, to end World War II. He is expected to draw comparisons between Japan in 1945 and Iraq in 2005, as the latter works toward achieving a constitutional democracy.

That kind of undermining the efforts in the Middle East can't be considered part of the grieving process! No Way!

She's been a hard-Left, anti-Semitic wacko her entire adult life from what I've been able to determine. Speaking of the grief process, what about Casey's dad and other close relatives? How horrible it must be for them to see his service and death used in this most despicable way by his own mother.

Had they bothered to check his daily schedule of trips, meeting w foreign heads, security advisory meeting, economic advisory meeting, etc., they would know that!

They don't need to check his schedule. Every week, the MSM receives the President's schedule for the week ahead from the WH Press Secretary's office. They know danged well how hard this President works, but they just prefer to lie about him constantly.

How about the further audacity of that woman to put the names of our fallen on crosses. She did not get permission from families to do so. If they make attempts to correct this, it just causes further heartache for those families! This woman is a scourge!

g'day snugs! No worries over the cricket - the Poms almost blew it - it was a great victory for England. About time! You know that I support Australia in everything (rugby, football, tiddlywinks..) except cricket. I am a die-hard English cricket fan - they might account for my headaches during the summer!

Ok - toaster time - can you find a piccy with W and my PM John Howard. Consider it a challenge - thanks mate!

Although I've seen it before, I'll never tire of it. That is one gorgeous photo of GWB. He looks great in that color blue.

Your own Prime Minister is highly regarded here on FR. He's one of President Bush's closest friends among international leaders. In my opinion, John Howard is also a truly great man.

For a man on "vacation" he has had a lot on his plate this summer.

Yeah. Isn't it a shame how "lazy" he is. Why the man only worked two or three days a week while on vacation, plus he gets his daily national security briefing no matter what. His predecessor barely knew his national security team, rarely met directly with the CIA director, and rarely held a cabinet meeting, although he galivanted all around the world living the high life.

Not all women

I wonder if her son didn't go into the service originally to get away from the situation at home?

As an international statesman John Howard is second to none and I am very proud that we have a leader like him representing Australia. Some of his domestic policies are leave a lot to be desired though especially things to do with industrial relations. But his government has been first-rate on issues to do with the threat of terrorism and their support of the coalition on the WOT.

what's going in your country?

To be absolutely honest and blunt, what's going on is the Communists who pushed the anti-war movement of the 1960's are having their last hurrah. This time, however, only the so-called mainstream media is paying much attention to them.
