Shove it! Your remarks are out of line.

I don't know how to get that water out until this thing crests and the pumps can be brought back online.

Thanks! I had just heard they wanted to make sure the channel was very clear before bringing them up river and they mentioned a bridge down.

Shallow is an understatement. Never saw such ineptness from a Governor.

Like I said, she looks like a middle manager at a big firm being asked a question at a department meeting: not only is she clueless, but she has no poise and is more scared of looking bad than she is or actually answering the question.

I had a boss like that, once. Just a dim bulb.

I watched that press conference and like I said earlier, she reminded me of Edith Bunker from All in the Family -- clueless. I don't see how she got elected because I have a hunch she was clueless before. I know she was when I heard her speak on Saturday after the President had declared an emergency.

You cannot have confidence in people like her and the Mayor -- cannot answer simple questions.

I suppose he could parachute in, since all airports in the area are closed...

Bwa-ha-ha! Yeah, like Mighty Mouse. "Here I come to save the daaaay!" I don't like to speak ill of another Freeper but I think Acadia has lost it.

I agree. Young Bobby Jindal ran against Blanco and was rejected by the people of Louisiana a few years back. I don't know how much better he would have done, but I'd side with him over Blankie Blanco any day of the week.

Sure isn't enough time to get a large ship in the area and helicopters are great rescuing but they need something much bigger.

You'll notice that those trucks are heading towards the SuperDome, not away from it. By now the water if probably higher, since it's reported to be rising inside the structure. These are likely folks being moved from even more precarious places. Might have to bring in Marine amphibs, which can swim it they need to, and ride on their tracks if they can. Some of the old WW-II (and Korean war) era DUCKs, which were a cross between a boat and a truck, (and were wheeled!) would be even better, since they didn't carry all that armor weight.

I sure wouldn't want to have to do it with CH-47s and CH-46s, but it could be done... if there happens to be an amphibious group nearby with it's aircraft.

Exactly and the President needs to stay in D.C. until it is safe for him to visit. All efforts need focused on getting those people out of N.O. not a Presidential visit IMHO.

Good thinking, I look for the USN to move an aircraft carrier and hospital ships into the area.

An earlier poster mentioned a US Navy amphib ship heading into that vicinity, so a "tsunami" style operation may well already be in the works...

I'd wager that there are community buildings and designated storm shelters in every district in LA that could be used to house people from New Orleans, and they are going to have to figure out some to use now. It should've been part of their original plan.

Amelia, these will have to be dispersed over a wide area. There are some 2000 or so staying in County/City facilities right now in my area and we are some 225 miles are more from N.O. Every hotel room is occupied and the same applies up as far as Dallas and beyond I'd guess. Houston estimates there are some 55,000 hotel rooms in that area occupied and other public facilities are being used to house evacuees.

This is going to be a mass undertaking of a very long range duration as I see it. The transportation infrastructe is damaged very badly or it seems to me based upon some of the pictures I've seen. There were signs along I-10 in the Houston area today as I came east alerting ppl to the I-10 closure just east of Baton Rouge.

Look for the President to do something regarding federalizing some of the efforts. I heard he was headed back to D.C. but I've not seen confirmation. LA, MS, AL, FL have over on average some 60% of their National Guard troops that can be activated. This is something beyond just a state effort now. imo.

Send several cruise ships to the docks in New Orleans. Load the stranded people on these floating hotels and take them to Baton Rouge or other Gulf Ports.

Assuming the docks are still there, how do you get the people to the docks? If you can get them there, you can probably get them to higher ground not too far away.

I think Marine Amtraks to haul them to more or less dry ground, with regular trucks, semi's with trailers if need be, to haul them from there, while the Amtracks go back for another load.

Heard earlier that there could be up to 1,000,000 homeless with no hope of returning to their homes or lots in the near future.

Post #21 you absolutely nailed it.

When was the last time the leeves/pumps were assessed? In the 1960s?

People sit back and think it won't happen to them, and then when it does happen the finger-pointing and blaming starts. These people remind me of car owners who don't do routine maintenance on their vehicles until something major happens.

I have never tried but it may be difficult to drive a hurricane.

Maybe a 10 or 20 megaton nuke set off in it's path, could do it. Of course it might strengthen the beast instead.

I could sit around with my middle schoolers and come up with more viable plans that would have worked when faced with a CAT FIVE hurricane barrelling up New Orleans rear

Actually most of the plan went pretty well. Most people evacuated before the storm got there. They did fall down in providing evacuation methods for those without their own transportation. They could have bussed folks to train yards, or truck terminals. Stuffed them in boxcars or into semi trailers, and moved 'em a few tens of miles out of the way. Of course you'd still be left with idiots who didn't get out when they could and should have.

I'll tell you what, if the Mayor, the Governor and the President tell me to move my a$$ out of town, I'm moving, as rapidly as I can waddle.
