As Hurricane Katrina bears down on the Gulf Coast states, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. has announced a donation of $1 million to The Salvation Army to provide early support for upcoming disaster relief assistance.

Currently, The Salvation Army is preparing to serve 400,000 meals per day to victims and first responders. Meals are being loaded onto 72 mobile canteens and two 54 foot mobile kitchens. The mobile feeding units will be dispatched into the most affected by FEMA, and will be followed, based on response needs, by other units the Army has at its disposal Ð trucks called comfort stations where residents can attend to personal hygiene; portable shower units; emergency response command stations for officers to direct the response efforts; and other equipment as needed.

Wal-Mart also is encouraging the general public to donate to emergency relief efforts through its 3,800 stores and CLUBS and through its Web sites. Beginning today on five of the company's Web sites - www.walmart.com, www.walmartstores.com, www.samsclub.com, www.walmartfacts.com, and www.walmartfoundation.org - the general public will find information and an access link to make credit card donations to help victims of Katrina. Also this week, Wal-Mart Stores, Neighborhood Markets and SAM'S CLUBS will be accepting customer donations at its facilities from any customer who would like to make a contribution for emergency relief assistance for Katrina victims and communities.

Also this week, Wal-Mart Stores, Neighborhood Markets and SAM'S CLUBS will be accepting customer donations nationwide at its facilities from any customer who would like to make a contribution for emergency relief assistance for Katrina victims and communities.

Wal-Mart Emergency Operations Team has been sending out needed merchandise across the Gulf Coast before the hurricane hit. Including supplying our stores in surrounding communities to help them prepare and clean up, Wal-Mart trucks have been sent to help service and community organizations with in-kind donation requests, such as flashlights, sleeping bags, outdoor camping pads and food products such as tomato and chicken noodle soup, crackers, and canned tuna.

"We are looking at a massive support and clean up effort due to this storm," said Major Dault Cunningham, Salvation Army Commander for the states of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. "We are appreciative of corporate leaders like Wal-Mart who continue to come through to help our communities in such times of need."

More than 80 Wal-Mart stores are currently closed in the Gulf Coast states, but the company's Emergency Operations Center is working 24/7 with its southeast distribution centers - all standing by as the storm passes to send truckloads of product to communities as stores re-open.

"We know that financial assistance early on is what enables organizations like the Salvation Army the ability to meet needs quickly as these storms move through," said Betsy Reithemeyer, vice president and executive director of the Wal-Mart & SAM'S CLUB Foundation. "We are all concerned and want to reach out with assistance as quickly as possible."

I am glad that we are self sufficient but a few offers from our allies would be nice.

I look for it from the U.K. and Japan.

Costco won't donate squat, bet they announce a "partnership" with the United Way or something and have YOU donate the money under their sponsorship.

Costco is a liberal company so it's to be expected.
