Yet in the media, all we hear about is New Orleans. It's like the rest of the states don't matter, at least to the media.

They probably don't know. I have heard several times a reporter say, "Nothing has been heard at all from so and so".

Someone earlier on FR mentioned a whole town had disappeared, no one heard from them. And someone looked it up and saw it was a town of over 20,000. So this may well be.

Everywhere except New Orleans (population 1,009,283 including suburbs), the worst has passed and we're in rescue/recovery mode. New Orleans is teetering on the brink of obliteration (based on the latest, I think the city still stands a chance). In Gulfport (urban population 205,754 in 2000), what's done is done. They got the same NWS bulletin

I am writing to a friend out of the country about this terribly tragic situation. Do you or anybody know if Mississippi got the same warnings to leave that Louisiana did? Thanks anyone for any information.

It chills me but I fear the obsession over New Orleans by the national press may have contributed to any problems due to folks not evacuating.

I wouldn't go that far. There's plenty of reporting outside of NOLA. Let's be real, this storm was huge, there's no possible way the media could cover every square inch of the debris field left by this massive hurricane. Katrina was 500+ miles wide.

You might try some other channels. Most of what I heard last night and part of this morning pretty much was the Miss. and Ala. coasts. Better pictures.
