Ft. Huachuca to lose 371 jobs in base realignment

The Department of Defense took its final vote on Ft. Huachuca. It will not be one of 33 major bases closed, but it will be one of the 29 bases realigned.

That means a loss of 371 jobs.

The DOD is moving the communications security division from Ft. Huachuca to a base in Maryland, taking those 300-plus jobs with it.

It's a tough move for families, but experts say it will have little impact on the base, considering the 12,000 other positions at Ft. Huachuca remain intact.

Sierra Vista's city manger also projects little trickle-down economic impact.

Mary Jacobs, Sierra Vista Assistant City Manager says, "What impact these people's moving may have will end up coming out even by all the people who continue to move into the community."

The DOD will submit its final report on recommended base realignments for the President's signature by September 8th.

A coupla others...these are the same positions marked for the move that we knew about when the original list came out.

I don't think any FReepers are affected, unless it causes the real estate market to bottom out! I really need it to stay hot for another month or so, long enough to get my house sold!!

good luck! My friends' two daughters each just sold their homes in Mesa without an agent. Saved a bunch. Market is crazy here.

Actually, at the last minute most of those 371 jobs were kept here. I think I read that only a couple dozen jobs were going to be moved. So, basically Fort Huachuca was unaffected by BRAC.

As of a week ago, I am no longer a Ft. Huachuca FReeper. I am now a TEXAS FReeper!

Whoo-hoo! We finally made it!

As for the Sierra Vista real estate issue... all I can say is SELL NOW. We made a very nice profit on our place after three years and my friend is looking at the same thing right now. They've only owned for a year. Interest rates are going up and it really won't get any better.
