This article should read 965 dead in Bridge Collapse, but CNN has it under their World: Iraq: Transition of Power section, so it HAS to look like it's a result of poor US leadership and intervention.
I'm surprised they didn't blame the bridge collapse on Bush and the presence of American troops.

As I understand it, the bridge was secondary, it was the stampede that caused the deaths but it was made worse by the bridge railing coming loose, not an actual bridge collapse.
CNN will always be what it was. The world according to Ted Turner. Even though he does not control it directly, old habits are hard to overcome.
When did it collaps? I thought the stampeed was caused by rumor of a suicide bomber?
Must have missed something with all this Katrina stuff.
According to this report, the railing never did collapse.

Snip--
"Health Minister Abdul-Mutalib Mohammed told state-run Iraqiya television that there were "huge crowds on the bridge and the disaster happened when someone shouted that there is a suicide bomber on the bridge." "This led to a state of panic among the pilgrims and they started to push each other and there was many cases of suffocation," he said. Earlier reports suggested that the bridge's railing collapsed, but television footage showed the green, waist-high railing undamaged."
Nothing here about it.

CNN reported this? Isn't that some kind of TV outfit that used to pay Saddam off to broadcast his propaganda messages?
