There was a guy (refugee) with big expensive headphones and an IPOD screaming into the camera that they need "basic necessities" such as food and water.

The refugees are getting restless and are now breaking into local hotels. There were fat women complaining that they haven't ate in days and the refugees are throwing gang like signs at the camera and chanting.

We have created a class of people who cannot fend for themselves and who rely on the government for everything.

And they will turn like savages on any one else they see with some water or a bit of french fries, or looks better off than they are. If I did not have a weapon in that situation, I don't know what I'd do. I'd have to fashion something. Some caustic agent to throw in their eyes to protect me and my family. I for sure would take off any watches or chains and would eat what little I had in privacy. Dang! this is Lord of the Flies 2005, only after five days.

No, they were created over a hundred years ago. WE haven't done anything to change that fact and the democratic party has revelled in keeping it that way.

Why do you think the Rev. Jackson is going there? Two reasons -- one to get his face on camera, but two to make certain these people don't figure out that those trying to help them really ARE good people and DO want to help them... sorry if I sound cynical, but that's a sad fact.

That's exactly what I thought when I saw the news coverage tonight. My heart goes out to the truely helpless, but alot of these folks need to get out of the victim mentality.

On the upside, you have to look at this in a global context.
The rest of the world is blaming us and saying our poor folks were left to fend for themselves in a flood and hurricanes and dead bodies....
Pan to Shep greeting very angry black women with her baby on her hip coming out of the water:
"I've been in my attic with water up to my neck for three days, I've had no sleep, nothing to eat, I've lost all that I have except what is on my back, I had to fight off an alligator, I'm tired as hell, and where the hell is the Governor and the Mayor?? My baby needs diapers!"
Now I ask you - when fancy Euros see poor folks in a horrible natural disaster, they usually collapse upon themselves in tears and lament all that they have lost.
America's poor folks, who have decided to stay or couldn't leave, rise up out of the water and give the proverbial middle finger, and are fighting for their very lives. Add to that, after all that mess, there we are - shopping (looting).
Yes, it's safe to say, the rest of the world will just never understand us Americans.
But you have to admit - I'm sure all of these images are scaring the living hell out of the rest of the world right now.
France lost hundreds of folks because it was hot. BECAUSE IT WAS HOT.

I would normally agree with you on this, but not now. These people DO need help, regardless of whether they were on welfare before the hurricane or not. There are plenty of people displaced by this hurricane that were not and have never been on welfare, and they too need help. You can only do so much for yourself when everything is gone and you have no way to leave.

You're right ... and people who have the energy to loot dozens of pairs of Nikes but not the energy to evacuate a city the government warned would be wiped out?
