It was the chief of police who told his men that they didn't have a place to put arrested looters and so the cops should just beat them up.

It seemed to work because I don't remember looting as a big problem during Hugo.

Since the year was 1989 I assume President George H.W. Bush also reminded them way ahead of time to prepare for emergency evacuation. And instead of sitting on their asses they actually did something (unlike the Louisiana "leadership").

I thought Beasley was Gov. He made a few mistakes on the evac portion, but the real star was Riley. I have no use for his politics but he did a good job in the aftermath.

I was living on James Island at the time. More than Riley, the star for me was Allstate. The way they handled the whole was masterful from my perspective.

I think one Major thing that helped Charleston was that people from all over the country "love" Charleston and mourned our losses with us. I imagine there are many people that "like" NOLA but I just don't think that people feel the same way.

Had it not been Charleston, I think things would have been mush more difficult.
