BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Reuters) - With thousands of troops pouring into New Orleans, law enforcement officials vowed on Saturday to retake the swamped city and halt a crime wave that erupted after Hurricane Katrina's destruction.
Saying he was carrying a message from President Bush, New Orleans U.S. Attorney Jim Letten said police and prosecutors were ready to hunt down a small group of criminals responsible for "horrendous" crimes in the stricken city.
"The streets of New Orleans belong to its citizens, not the violent thugs who have stuck their heads up out of holes in an attempt to exploit a national tragedy," Letten told reporters.
"Not one inch of that city is going to be ceded to the criminal element," he said in Baton Rouge. "Not one inch

I think this is great news. It means Bush is doing through the law what Gov. Blanco won't let him do through the usual channels, since she refuses to request Fed aid.
Now that the Superdome is empty there's a holding cell available.
It'll make Camp Gitmo look like Club Med.
Start with the mayor and gov.
Don't tell me they're going to start arresting Democrats.
Ah, Bush doing the job the local government refused to do.
I hope they can do it. And then I hope their zeal carries over to other State AGs and the police forces in our states where other major citites have these exact same problems right now.
We, as a Nation, should be heeding this hard-earned lesson. But, we probably won't. :(
I reposted your thread because I thought it was a good one.
I think this is great news - law and order taking over in LA. I was going to say "taking over again," but I'm not sure to what extent it was there in the first place.
I keep hearing all this "we're going to do" stuff. I would like to hear some "we did" stuff.
Quote of the day!
I share your worries - I think that unless this is nipped in the bud, it could spread.
One thing that most people are ignoring, also, is the large number of Black Muslims spread out through the extensive ex-prison population of LA. Didn't John Muhammed (one of the DC snipers) spend time there? This is a national security issue.
New Orleans / The State of Louisiana unable to take care of business themselves...........
.....is it still Bush's fault?
A**holes.
as former congressman Billy Tauzin once put it, "half of Louisiana is under water and the other half is under indictment."
Exactly. No one on the left seems to be the least bit concerned that the US military has essentially taken control of and American city.
Bob Hope Says it all......

President Bush is damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't.
First, he's a failure because he did not take over immediately.
Then, when he asks to take over, the locals say, "No way!"
If he lets the locals run the show (which they are supposed to do),
he's heartless, uncaring, and incompetent.
If he steps in and assumes authority, he's a dictator and a tyrant.
The president is in a no-win situation, and the Democrats love it!
Speaking of state AGs, I remember watching C-span some time ago with democrats telling other democrats to watch the AGs in the nation. They are the next Democratic leaders. So we all need to focus on our own state's AGs and see the future; those who, in Democratic circles, are moving on up.
The New Orleans PD in the face of danger seemed to fold up like a new division in the Iraqi army. That was pretty surprising to see.
Now the Battle-trained US military are gonna have to teach those looting pillagers a lesson or two about urban warfare, dont bring that stuff in here you deadbeats.
The problem is that the US military hasn't taken control of NO. They can't under our Constitution, which is a good thing. Go back and reread it, since you seem to be unaware of this.
But in a situation like this, if the Governor requested them, they could have certain specific and controlled law enforcement abilities that the NOPD clearly has lost or never had to begin with. That saves the lives of decent people - which is a good thing.
It is NOT the Federal government's job to restore order in an American city.
Something really stinks here.
It would seem to be the only option remaining, other than anarchy. Decades of corruption neutered all other law enforcement apparatus. Not that the end justifies the means, mind you, but this is not without precedent.
