Man on terrorist watch list accused in stabbings (N.C.)
Hendersonville Times-News ^ | September 06, 2005 | Jennie Jones Giles

A man listed on the Department of Homeland Security's terrorist watch list is accused of stabbing his common-law wife Monday, fleeing the scene with their 10-month-old baby and later slitting the baby's throat before cutting his own throat.

The baby girl was listed in critical condition Monday night at Mission Hospitals, said a hospital spokesman. Her father, Mohammed Al-Hilo, 22, was listed in serious condition. No condition report on victim Batrina Lynn McKinney was available Monday night from Pardee Hospital.

Al-Hilo is an Iraqi alien listed on the Terror Watch List, Henderson County Sheriff's Department Detective Walt Harper said. His address was listed as 67 Hope Creek Lane, Apartment 4, in the Barker Heights community near Jackson Park.

"We knew he was here," Harper said. "The FBI would contact local lawenforcement every time we had dealings with him."

"At 5:44 p.m. Monday, the Hendersonville Police Department received a phone call from a young child who said her daddy had just killed her mommy," said Police Chief Donnie R. Parks.

The first officers on the scene found an adult female lying on her porch at 308 Rose St. in Hendersonville with multiple cuts and stab wounds about her face, neck and extremities, Parks said.

The wounds appeared to be serious and possibly life threatening, he said. McKinney, who was born in 1981, was transported by the Henderson County Emergency Medical Services to Pardee Hospital.

Witnesses at the scene told officers that McKinney came home and was unloading groceries when the assault occurred. Al-Hilo was waiting on McKinney at the house, the witnesses said.

There was a domestic violence protection order prohibiting Al-Hilo from being around the victim, Parks confirmed.

The couple's 10-month-old baby was still in McKinney's 1990s brown Chevrolet Astro Van when Al-Hilo fled the scene in the vehicle, Parks said.

A deputy with the Henderson County Sheriff's Department spotted the van headed toward N.C. 191, Harper said.

Sheriff's Department officers waited at the N.C. 280/191 intersection while other officers were in pursuit of the van down N.C. 191 from Hendersonville toward Asheville.

As deputies closed in on the van from both directions, Al-Hilo turned into the parking lot of the Van Wingerden Greenhouse Co.

"He refused to obey the officers' commands to step out of the vehicle," Harper said. "The officers saw him inside the vehicle attempting to do something in the back seat."

When officers approached the van, they saw that the baby's throat had been slit and Al-Hilo also had a slit throat, Harper said.

Medical emergency helicopters from Mission Hospitals in Asheville airlifted the baby and the suspect from the scene.

Sheriff's Department crime scene technicians and detectives were on the scene Monday until dark.

On the asphalt was a brightly colored fleece baby blanket that depicted a young girl dancing on the sand wearing a party hat, and it was stained with blood. It was a stark reminder of the tragedy that had just unfolded.

The Hendersonville Police Department will be charging Al-Hilo with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, as well as other charges, Parks said. The Henderson County Sheriff's Department will charge the suspect with similar charges for the assault committed against the baby, he said.

The incident is still under investigation, Parks said.

I knew an old boy up there who I used to work with. Nice guy but this was back in the 90s. Not this guy but he and his whole family were Saudis living in Asheville. The parents were stable, and probably law abiding. This old boy and his brother though, I could see them being on somebody's list one day

....and the world wonders why we hate these bastards so.

Not just a baby, but his own baby daughter!

What I find also amazing about this story is;

1. The guy was a known alien suspect on a Terrorist Watch List

2. The local police knew it and were just "observing" him and knew his home address

3. He had a court restraining order against him, so he was known as a dangerous troublemaker

4. The FBI were well aware of him

5. He was still here, in town, running around loose instead of either in Gitmo or long ago sent back to Iraq where he could be handled by Iraqi authorities

Incredible, is it not?

And the authorities are asking us to keep our eyes open!??

"There was a domestic violence protection order prohibiting Al-Hilo from being around the victim, Parks confirmed."

Sheesh, maybe they should have written the restraining order in Arabic? How's a violent domestic criminal suppose to know if he can't read the restraining order?! We should probably get Hillary to form a congressional committee to look into the failure of the Bush administration's domestic violence policies...

...well that sure helped... If you have to file a protection order then you need a weapon, cause all it's going to do is p#ss off the other party. If that guy is psycho enough to need law enforcement to file a protective order then he's violent and she needed a gun...

oh well, at least they can charge him with violating a protective order, on top of murder.... once again, leave it up to the local government to protect you... you get ................... pretty much a piece of paper with a phone number on it.

If he was an Iraqi that had committed crimes (local police were familiar with him) couldn't/shouldn't his VISA be denied and he be deported? I thought being on a visa was kind of like being on "supervision" where if you committed a crime (esp. a violent one) you lost the right to stay.

Of course the article didn't raise these issues, so it's hard to know what happened really... It doesn't seem that journalists are as thorough nowadays.
