when British students said things inside were horrific, more than a few freepers dismissed the "rumors," apparently because they reflect badly on FEMA as well as on the local authorities. Can't dismiss these atrocities as rumors anymore

Local authorities KNEW there would be problems with crime in the refuge centers""
Yes the local authorities are incompetent, so is the FEMA director and the Homeland Security director. If this is "homeland security," you'd better hope we don't have a terrorist attack, because all that tax money shoveled at federal "homeland security" isn't going to buy us any security.

Read El Gato's post 187 and that should remove any doubt. As someone posted also, the mutilation aspect may partly be explained if the cannabalism stories are true.

FEMA is not a first-response agency, nor is it intended to be.
FEMA required a plan for evacuation, which Nagin did not follow.

So homeland security is supposed to protect us from widespread reversion to less than animal behavior by our own population, our own neighbors? I don't get it.

So there are your witnesses, unless you think Mikel Brooks is lying, along with the NG Lt. Col. from Texas referenced above? Coming from a place where they shoot at those who try to rescue them, I do not doubt.

I can't begin to imagine.I don't want to imagine it, but too late, I read about it... and I cannot discern the difference between rage and frantic bewilderment...

The British and Australians gave their names when interviewed, I think that is noteworthy; they are not anonymous sources.
If need be they could be interviewed by the FBI or whomever.
There are a LOT of coroners in the disaster area or enroute; no doubt every body will be assessed by a skilled medical professional.

Maybe an SUV is at fault. I haven't heard this on the MSM.

Just another isolated incident.

Seriously - can we throw the voodoo factor into the mix?A lot of those people in New Orleans (formerly) think that pagan practice is rather cute, don't they?

Wonder if they think this is BS: Just back from a visit to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center on Saturday afternoon, Neville was cut, bruised and a little despondent. Among the horrible things she'd seen last week, she said, was the rape of old women, girls and boys. "Some people hate themselves, so they hate everybody else. Those people were not true New Orleanians," she said. But Neville saw heroes, too. "There are many, many heroes that have come out this. People talking about what I did. I didn't do nothing. Everybody did something." Neville said that she, too, was raped during those chaotic days. "What he took from me was nothing, because he can't take my spirit, he can't take my soul. My soul is New Orleans." http://2theadvocate.com/stories/090405/new_soul001.shtml

Wow, this is very sad. I cannot imagine what the people in the convention center went through as well as the troops who have to go through all of these bodies.I'm wondering why Nagin sent the cops to Las Vegas and Atlanta. Did Nagin send the cops away so no one could question them about how they failed in controlling the violence?

I read that the man who raped and slit the throat of the seven year old, was then attacked by seven or eight men and beaten to death. Maybe this will soon be confirmed.

For all the M. Savage bashing on FR, he truly was ahead of the curve in calling the enemy by its name, a mental disorder with deadly results.
I can't stand this over primped, over pampered, over placated C$%^ to begin with, so I had no problem calling her out.

The city and state are to blame for corraling these people like pigs in a pen with no security, food, water, toilets, or basic sanitation.
Yes many acted liked pigs, but you can't blame many of the people for what happened.
