ping!
Thanks for the links! I might head over to the dojo on Friday after school.
Yes, but remember, movies are not the same as the real world. They fake all that in movies. Plus, Judo Gene LeBell choked Seagal out to the point of Seagal wetting his pants on the set of a movie where LeBell was doing stuntwork. Seagal was bragging about how much of a bad*ss he was and dared anyone to challenge him. The thing about Aikido is that the founder, Morihei Ueshiba, became a "Japanese Hippie" in his later years and found love and harmony. As a result, he decided that Aikido would offer NO resistance when training, and NO competing or competitions. So you never get to see what it's like to really fight someone. You never get to find out if it works or not. You never experience what true training is. You might as well be ballroom dancing.
Do it man do it!!! At the least you'll have a load of fun trying to choke and arm bar your opponents. But be warned, it is very humbling to get your a** kicked for the first six months by the veterans.
And kicked it will be.
"Any man that choses to fight empty handed is a fool" my Army hand to hand combat instructor, 1977 Ft Bragg NC. "That is why God created, sticks, rocks and etc on the ground."
He was right!

So Aikido is French Judo?
I think the MSM has pretty much blacked out cases where folks in NO have used guns to defend themselves.
LOL I know what you're getting at, but believe it or not, the French, Koreans and Japanese lead the world in Judo. No kidding, the French are actually good at one form of fighting. Who woulda thunk?
I thought the French fought with their feet? (To paraphrase an old French Joke, I'll leave out the second half of the joke)
ROTGLMAO
Thanks for the laugh. How right you are my friend.
Never bring 'one hand clapping' to a gun fight.
Don't know about stats, but commen sense: If the perp is armed and at arms length -- close enough to touch, he's gotten too close and you're already at a disadvantage. If there's more than one perp, then I would think the odds narrow considerably. Better to (have fire power), avoid high risks/confrontations, and be prepared to assess a situation and make a split second decision.
A good book is "Street Smarts, Firearms & Personal Security: Staying Alive and Avoiding Crime in the Real World. by Jim Grover.
He does have some chapters on "Less Than Lethal" defense weapons and options. His emphasis is on the word "Avoid" but has several good, common sense chapters on confrontations, securing your home and workplace, and developing a multi layer approach to personal and home security.
I used to teach karate. I had one student who after four lessons decided to defend against a store robbery. He got shot in the arm. He's lucky to be alive. One can get carried away with a false sense of power.
After years of training, knowing a martial art will improve your survival chances. A fast drawing concealed handgun will go much further. Many seasoned martial arts practitioners carry where they feel threatened.
I didn't. I studied TKD at a much, much later point in my martial arts journey. By that time, I'd become a big fan of Korean style kicking.
I actually left Judo while still a teenager to study karate. Blame Chuck Norris for that one. In my teen years, I idolized the man for his movies. As an adult, I admire him for being such a nice guy.
For what it's worth, of everything I've studied, I've found Arnis to be the most valuable. Judo and Ju Jitsu run second.
I eventually became a big fan of environmental martial arts training, and actually lament the lion's share of non-environmental instruction that I went through as a child, teenager, and younger man.
That's really rather worthless. If I'm carrying a gun, why would I let you get close enough to wrestle with me? The whole advantage to a gun is that you kill from a safe distance. Up close and personal, a knife in trained hands is deadlier than a gun at the same distance. The guy with the gun however, is under no obligation to let anyone that close to him.
It's better to be trained in all three self-defense domains than just one. Firearms, close quarter weapons and unarmed self-defense. Personally, I think anyone who neglects two of them in favor of just one is a fool.
