Katrina, a photographic timeline: Powerful proof federal response was NOT slow (warning, many pics)
Yahoo News Photos ^ | 9/6/05

The near total evacuation of the major American port city of New Orleans, Louisiana was accomplished between Tuesday afternoon, August 30 and Friday afternoon, September 2, 2005. This evacuation occurred while other search, rescue, relief and evacuation operations were simultaneously being conducted throughout the Gulf Coast between approximately Lafayette, Louisiana, on the west and the Florida panhandle on the east -– an area of about 90,000 sq. miles, or the size of the entire nation of Great Britain.

I'd say this amazing achievement is the opposite of slow. I'd say that it's a stunning accomplishment and one that demonstrates superb organization, remarkable logistics flow, and the greatness of the American spirit.

From the following photographic timeline, it should be clear to all reasonable people that the failure of government response occurred before the hurricane hit, and it occurred solely at the local and state level.

You bring up a salient point. New Orleans did pretty well in re damage, compared to Biloxi and other areas, until the levees gave way.

The hurricane did not seem to do as much damage as the flood which followed.

The parishes toward the Gulf appear to have been harder hit in terms of overall destruction.

There just aren't the words to tell you how angry it makes me to see what looks like a couple of thousand vehicles jammed up and unable to move while the two inbound lanes are empty. Twice the people could have moved out twice as fast if they'd opened the Southbound lanes to Northbound traffic.

On another note, Blanco was apparently saying on Fox yesterday that city buses HAD been used to evacuate residents before Katrina hit. There are no buses in those photos of the highway.

Good morning. And thanks to YOU. Re the laptop, I'm still working on an old Win98 x486 machine at home, with dial in service. The thing crashes more than it's up, or so it seems. Didn't stop me from doing what I felt had to be done, though. Laptop will be purchased probably on next payday -- at least that's the plan.

I am downloading (with dialup at 24.6) and making cd's of the entire piece.

I can't thank you enough. That's the kind of thing I want to hear from FReepers. We can spread this truth far and wide.
