FEMA Blocks Photos of New Orleans Dead

By E&P Staff

Published: September 07, 2005 12:06 PM ET

NEW YORK Forced to defend what some critics consider its slow response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said on Tuesday it does not want the news media to take photographs of the dead as they are recovered from New Orleans.

FEMA, which is leading the rescue efforts, rejected requests from journalists to accompany rescue boats as they went out to search for storm victims, Reuters reported.

A FEMA spokeswoman told the wire service that space was need on the rescue boats and assured Reuters that "the recovery of the victims is being treated with dignity and the utmost respect."

"We have requested that no photographs of the deceased be made by the media," the spokeswoman told Reuters via e-mail.

I still haven't heard from relatives in Plaquemines Parish...and I wouldn't want to see them on some newscast!

I think this is a good idea.

I would not want the dead body of my loved one being used by the media for propaganda like they did in Mogadishu when an American serviceman was dragged through the streets. It would seem no different that Guiliani preventing pictures of the bodies of dead jumpers splattered on the ground outside the WTC (if such pictures were available).

Who actually wants to see pictures of dead bodies? I would like for the MSM to share some man-on-the-street interviews with people who are demanding to see these pictures.

Those photographers had better be careful- if they are white and taking photos of poor, dead, black people- the MSM will accuse them of exploiting the poor and black people of NO for personal gain, or not caring about them, or not being sensitive to the special needs of African Americans....

oh, wait a min....

It's good that FEMA has made this decision. It will only antagonize the media into showing more bodies. Perhaps then we can get the story away from the welfare class and onto the worst victims of the storm.

No, I don't want to see close-ups of faces, etc. But bodies floating face down ought to be part of the story.

Not surprising. I don't really care to see them, though.

Not I, but make no mistake about it, the bodies will be shown, Remember the flag draped coffins?

By FEMA flatly saying no the media will be saying "What are you hiding? Bullet holes from RNC Snipers"?

"On the other hand, if they show bodies from a distance that are not identifiable I would not have a problem. But I will be keeping my kids away from the TV also."

I was watching Fox News with my 5 year-old the other day when Shepard Smith showed a dead body lying on the road. I discussed the disaster with my son and explained what was going on. It was a learning experience and one I think he is better off for. I'm not saying it would be a good idea to pull pictures of bodies off of the internet to show him, but I think it was fine for him to see it in context.

That's how I see it, the ghoulish leftist-MSM has lost another prop. Who cares what the families would think, we got to get Bush.

I saw a few minutes of Scarborough last night and that is what he was doing, I turned the channel on the TIVO to CNN that's how offensive it was.

I don't want to see pictures of the dead, but there is one thing worse than the reality of a horrific disaster. That is to be treated as a child by my government. I strongly hope that many are ignoring Big Brother's "request".

If you want to see the dead so badly why not volunteer to help recover them.

After seeing one of Oprah's boys posing in front of one of the dead, I've seen enough.
...

Yes, that "boi" was none other than Nate, Oprahs hand picked decorette.
Their carnival side show was dispicable yesterday. It's so much easier to hold a microphone and mug for the camera instead of lending a helping hand. Considering he recently survived the Tsunami any decent person would wonder what the heck was he thinking? I doubt he would've condoned some reporter standing in front of his former lover Fernando's dead body which BTW has never been recovered from the Tsunami. Liberalism, a strange twisted mindset filled with indescribable dysfunctional double standards.

The more disturbing 9/11 pictures are nowhere to be found, either.

Well what would be the purpose? If it's just to gross people out, we don't need to see the photos. They could be used by the MSM to bash Bush (really Blanco and Nagin really need to be bashed) Unfortunately I have a feeling that a lot of these poor folks besides not having cars to get themselves oput of New Orleans were just hanging out waiting for the government to take action rather they themselves taking action. If you're old, infirm or a mother with a bunch of kids it would be hard to mobilize without any help---but there looked like there were a percentage of able bodied dudes hanging around too. Whassup with that?

This most likely has to do with identification of dead and notification of family.

Who wants to learn Mom, Dad, little brother, etc. is dead from pictures in the paper or the evening news?

And you think a wife wouldn't recognize the shirt her husband was wearing? Or the blouse you gave your Aunt for her birthday? You think they wouldn't put that together with the house on the corner or across the street?

You think if the face doesn't show there is no lack of respect for the dead?
