Well, the little boy would probably heal a bit better if he could have his puppy back.

I don't understand why people can't keep their animals with them, it makes more sense than sending rescuers back in later to try to find them.

It's bad enough to lose your home and possessions, but to lose your best friend is the ultimate loss.

This fat-ass cop should be horsewhipped.

Why, for putting lives before pets? Most had to leave their dogs behind, and this was when there was a hellstorm about getting everyone out of the Superdome ASAP. Very sad that they couldn't take their pets, but this was an extreme case. How much more increased risk of disease would there be if everyone had been allowed to bring their pets, filthy from the water and dirty streets, onto buses and into shelters? It isn't the officers fault that this situation was akin to a pet owner's Sophie's Choice. Better to lose a pet than lose children and the elderly to disease or exhaustion or weakened immune systems from the stress and lack of nutrients.

I just can't in any way trash these officers who did their duty in the worst conditions of hell for a week.

Yeah, one in the same. Mick, a retired IBM employee (as I remember it), used to describe what he did (make tacos and ???) with 'discarded' puppies and kittens that appeared near his ranch ...

Increased risk of disease, compounded by long bus rides where pets would likely go to the bathroom on the bus.

Wow,that was a weird analogy.

Yes it is and doesn't pertain to this thread

1.We all know the seriousness of the situation.
2.No one thinks a dog is more valuable than a human
3. We all feel compassion for the people of NO and a little boy (yes its possible to do both!)
4. Its something, even in a small way we can do, besides giving money, that has value, i.e. restoring something that a little boy who lose everything else, loves with all his heart

And last but not least, you either get it or you don't

Yes, that one is heartbreaking. That's one reason I didn't post it. Bless the little pooche's heart. I pray that it is safe.

Why were other pets allowed on other buses?

Why not just ask if anyone on the bus would mind a little lap-size doggie on the ride?
I have a feeling that most could relate to wanting to hold on to something near and dear after losing everything, which is a feeling I pray you never have to experience

but it ain't BIG NEWS TO BE UPSET ABOUT when there are thousands of dead people floating around.

LOL! Who cares about a bunch of corpses? Nothing can be done about them except collect them.

Dogs and cats are alive and can be rescued and reunited with someone who is no doubt thinking about them.

I agree we should not trash Police for doing their job, but there has been no consistency here. Why are some allowed to bring their pets while a little boy is deprived of his? It is a little dog not a rott or Dobie. Most Police officers are animal lovers to a fault, but this guy just looked like he did not care. I would drive 600 miles and sleep in my car rather than leave my Dog, Cat and two stray cats behind to fend for themselves. If someone tried to take my dog , they better check their groin because that is where my knee would be. You should never, ever put all those different animals together, especially in a stairwell.

It's getting easy to pick out the people who didn't get a puppy when they were little.

I wasn't aware of pets being allowed on any buses from the Superdome, Convention Center, I-10 bridges downtown, or the I-10 loading points on the west side in Jefferson Parish, at least until Saturday when most were out and things began to slow down.

But the increased health risks of allowing pets into shelters were substantial, and logistically most shelters weren't equipped to deal with pets. Sorry, a disaster is a terrible thing in many ways. Many evacuees were very weakened from the stress and days without food, water, sleep, and the unsanitary conditions. We will never know how many lives were saved from not allowing pets on the evac buses and in shelters, but I am certain that lives were saved. I would never be able justify the death of someone's child or grandmother just because I insisted on keeping my pet.

I can, and will, especially since the military is picking up dogs and cats right and left on the rescues they make.

If some momma can bring a trash bag full of God-knows-what on the bus, a child should be able to bring a pet on the bus.

So upsetting I could hardly bear to post it either.

But it does give an idea of where the bus was.

Maybe it will help identify that particular situation, I don't know.

Ok that's a stretch
We are talking about people who lived in poop for days and a possible poop from 8lb.white fluffy dog is gonna make someone keel over?
