One of the most terrifying moments of my life was when I drove over the San Francisco Bay Bridge to work on the morning of September 11, 2001. The Twin Towers had both crashed to pieces, and the Pentagon was hit. There was an erroneous report of an explosion at the Capitol. All flights had been downed by the Transportation Dept., and the only question mark was Flight 93, destined for San Francisco International Airport.
In my early years, I couldn't cross the Bay Bridge without irrationally thinking about the idea of it collapsing somehow, plummeting the family car into the Bay. Over three decades later, I flashed back to those fears, wondering what in nell I could possibly do -- besides have a coronary -- if I saw the jet headed for the bridge.
Thanks in part to your father, I never had to face my fear, and by preventing an attack on the White House, this nation was spared chaos the likes of which is unimaginable.

Coop, thanks for the ping. Before I opened up FR tonight, I was unwrapping a large flag and pole I bought expressly for my own kind of memorial - I am planning to stand on the town green and wave that flag all alone. Maybe the people driving by will not automatically think "boy, look at that nut", but wish they could pull over and join me. If you're talking about doing this on 9/11, I don't think too many people will consider you a nut. I bet you'll be pleased at the positive response you receive. Best wishes!

Dear Chris,
I just read your post and my heart ached for you and the tears poured down. I will be honored to help support this memorial to celebrate the life of your Father and all others. I am going to send this to all of my friensds. I will never forget the attack and am willing to bare any burden to prevent another. God bless you and all families that lost their loved one on September 11. You just reminded me that I live in a country surrounded by hereos both past and present and now I think you are a hero as well because you are willing to share your story.

Chris, thank you for this post.
I was in the States last year, New Jersey, actually, and I sat up in my hotel room crying, watching the list of names of those who died.
This may sound strange, but I could feel it in the air, the memory of 9/11, the grief.
I'm so sorry about your father.
To: chris_in_nj
God bless you and your family, Chris. I'll show your post to my son, and we will say a prayer for you all.
Thank you, and I echo the others: Your father was a hero, and I am thankful to him and his flightmates.

I began this 4th anniversary opening this thread and saying a prayer for yours and the other 9/11 families. "Have You Forgotten" is playing and my tears won't stop. Chris, thank you for your father who, with the others, refused to shrink in fear but defiantly fought back to save us. God bless each and every family who grieves the loved ones who died as a result of 9/11/01. My heart will always be tender for the Americans we lost and my mind will never let go of the anger at evil done on that day--as others have said, I will never forget.
Thank you for giving a first hand account of "Flight 93". I've seen the commercials for a couple of weeks and have wanted to watch but was afraid it might not be complimetary or historically accurate. I'm proud to hear they have worked to put together a piece that honors the memories of your Dad and the other passengers and preserves history. We're taping it, I may have to watch it later because my sister has already told me she won't be able to watch.
To those I pinged, I thought y'all might like to hear a first hand account that the Discovery documentary does a worthy job of portraying the heroism of Flight 93. And to give you an opportunity to share your thoughts/wishes/prayers with Chris whose Dad, Joe Driscoll, was one of those heros.
GOD BLESS FLIGHT 93

The only solace I took on that day was that the 19 descended immediately to Hell to meet their "prophet".
Four years in a Hell and an eternity to follow.

There are defining moments in time when events and actions coincide that are forever engraved on the collective psyche; while we may never know the depth of hatred that led to this despicable act of cowardice we may eventually learn the height of man's courage to rise above it.

Absolutely insulting! What will you do about it???
Final Design Announced
The design for the permanent Memorial for Flight 93 was announced on September 7, 2005 amid overwhelming support . .
So the mark of the Jihadists will forever emblazon our landscape. Is it time to cry for America yet...???????????? This design seems to be a fitting memorial for the Muslims who died aboard Flt 93. The hijackers whose ashes are fused into the shale with those of their victims, of all the shapes, in all of geometry, they pick the symbol of Muslim power, THE CRESCENT!!!
Why not a monument of the passengers beating the crap out of the hijackers?
"When it comes to a memorial, all mankind sympathizes," he said." The idea of the Crescent of Embrace, Murdoch said, is to be a gesture of healing and bonding.
Muslims didn't/don't sympathize - THEY consider this to have been a great victory! This is like making a holocaust memorial in the shape of a swastika. Absolutely disgusting. I think is a slap in the face of every solider that is fighting terrorism now. And a shameful way to honor those that have died in this fight.
Recognize it for what it is....
A commemoration for those who bravely died in their fight to expand islam!
Fouad El Bayly, leader of the Islamic Center of Johnstown, said the crescent isn't a holy symbol, but one identified with the lunar Muslim calendar.
This atrocity was commissioned by the National Park Service Memorial Project under the direction of Ms Joanne Hanley.

Dear Chris,
I am late posting to this thread, but I want to thank you so much for letting us know about this show. I debated watching it because I know how the media and entertainment industry love distorting things. This was such a horrific event, I did not believe they would do this without filling it with PC garbage. Now I know from you that this show is worthwhile. I will require my 16 year old son to watch. We will all be watching as a family.
Even now, four years later, this day evokes strong emotions from me, and I lost no one. I cannot possibly imagine what this day must be like for you and your family, but I grieve with you, and I and my family with pray for you and the others who lost family members that day.
Thank you, and may God bless you and your family.
