Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005 11:38 a.m. EDT Ray Nagin: School Buses Not Good Enough

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin garnered a ton of publicity with a profanity-laced interview he gave to WWL radio last Thursday, where he blasted President Bush and Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco for not coming to rescue his city in time.

However, Nagin's most newsworthy comments - where he explained why he didn't used hundreds of city school buses to evacuate his city's flood victims - went almost unnoticed.

Turns out, Nagin turned his nose up at the yellow buses, demanding more comfortable Greyhound coaches instead. "I need 500 buses, man," he told WWL. "One of the briefings we had they were talking about getting, you know, public school bus drivers to come down here and bus people out of here."

Nagin described his response:

"I'm like - you've got to be kidding me. This is a natural disaster. Get every doggone Greyhound bus line in the country and get their asses moving to New Orleans."

While Nagin was waiting for his Greyhound fleet, Katrina's floodwaters swamped his school buses, rendering them unusable.

Imagine if Nagin would have used the school buses:

MSM report: "Victims of the New Orleans "Tart Cart" school bus evacuation fiasco appeared in Federal Court today ready to pursue their lawsuit against the Federal Government. Represented by a legal "dream" team of John Edwards, Mark Geragos and Thomas Mesereau the suit filed claims that the New Orleans residents had their civil rights violated when onlookers and nameless government officials riding in their own cool SUVs started laughing and taunting them with shouts of "Look at the retards!!!" while riding in some of the New Orleans school systems 'short buses'"

Tom Meserau argued that "The Citizens of New Orleans would have been better off left at home and not publicly embarrassed. President BUSH has got some explaining to do why Greyhounds and other 'tricked out' motor coaches could not be sent to the victims in need. After all, these people's images are on the line here..."

That, is something I wouldn't know. But then again, before the hurricane, no one knew for sure if an evacuation was really necessary. I've been through many hurricanes, where evacuation was recommended, but after, it was found to be not necessary.

I drove a school bus full of kids on a field trip the first time I ever sat in the bus driver's seat.

What about the city transit buses then? They are good enough for the rest of us, but not those poor folk? He had hundreds of those kicking around as well. Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

The plain fact is he had around a thousand buses at his disposal. If there are 10,000 dead people in NO, that's blood on his and that ding-bat Blanco's hands, because the evacuation plan clearly states that those buses are the primary method to be used for evacuation. They failed to follow their own state plan.

This trashy POS excuse for a mayor, should not have a job shortly -- still trying to pass the buck for his typically-liberal, disfuctional job performance.

I heard some of the excerpts from that interview -- this man is a disgusting embarrasment to American black people -- just amazing.

I have no knowledge of the plan, but I agree about the SNAFU.

Exactly. There are about 400 city buses there - they could have easily carried 16,000 people (+standees) to safety - and they ARE air-conditioned!

Nagin described his response:

"I'm like - you've got to be kidding me."

Was Nagin really like that? Or was he just somewhat like that? Or maybe he was actually like something else but he just forgot what he was like.

He obviously just thought, "Oh well, the federal government will replace them". He didn't (doesn't) care about NO. Not the people, not it's infrastructure, nothing. He was an opportunist, riding the political bandwagon for as long as the ride lasted. He had power and thugery under his rule in the only place that would have had a loser like him.
