In the aftermath of 9-11, New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani stood out as a strong leader in desperate times. Last year, Gov. Jeb Bush impressed many with his ability to calm Floridians as the state was bombarded with four hurricanes.
Who will emerge in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina? It might be too soon to say, but there are several contenders.
When local, state and federal officials couldn't figure out what to do with the thousands of hurricane victims stranded in the New Orleans Superdome and Convention Center, Texas Gov. Rick Perry did not hesitate to open his state to the evacuees.
About 18,500 survivors were housed in Houston's Astrodome and an adjacent meeting hall, according to Perry's office. More than 120,000 were in 97 shelters in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and smaller cities across the state, with another 100,000 in hotels and motels. Uncounted more were in churches or private homes.

Texas Ping!!!
True leaders have emerged.
Unfortunately, NONE of them elected officials from Louisiana..........
God blessed Texas and we are good neighbors..
I thank every one who has rescued, housed, fed, delivered, donated..I thank the many Red Cross volunteers, the Salvation Army, the churches, the business donors...everyone who has donated. I thank those helping the victims seek jobs, schools and more permanent shelter..I thank those who are cleaning up..
I thank the nurses, doctors, medics. God bless the Coast Guard and our military who are helping...
May God be with those who are working day and night to make things better.
Prayers for all the victims of this Hurricane.
GEORGE BUSH, 'cept will never happen cuz of the treacherous press.
The benefits we reap were started by GW when he was governor.
Indeed!
Lt Gen. Honore by a mile.
General Honore!
Jabbar Gibson, "bus thief"
And why is Rick Perry the big hero in all of this?
Well, according to the interview that Al Katie conducted the other day, he and his state and local leaders DID WHAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT RECOMMENDED THEY DO to prepare for a natural disaster.
Does anybody in here realize that Texas simply executed their pre-plan for a hurricane hit on Galvaston?
That's what state and local officials are SUPPOSED to do. It's what they get PAID to do.
It's what they are OBLIGED to do.
RLTW
Bump for Jabbar Gibson!
Comparison of 911 to Katrina, as apples to oranges. When the final tally is in, Katrina will prove larger than all of the combined nation's disasters that have occurred over the last decade.
I simply do not think many have come to realize the scope and magnitude as to what has happened.
You are right..I understand the large area of devastation...I of course see the flooding in NO..I understand the force of the storm surge along the Gulf coast and the wind damage...I see the evacuees, those standing by the pile of rubble where their homes once stood, the jobs that have been lost..I understand the infrastructure damage...I cannot but imagine the loss of life will be much greater than now known.Yet it is too big to really grasp..The destruction of so many lives, homes, jobs, the changing of the coastline..Where to rebuild, what to rebuild..
It is really beyond comprehension.
The American Tax payer.
I can tell you who it's NOT!!!
Major Garrett..
