I don't have a problem with someone being named to head up the rebuilding of the city of New Orleans...not necessarily in a dictatorial manner, but to at least get the infrastructure going again, etc.

I mean, look, an area the size of the state of Kansas got pummeled. Getting someone to be a point person on the rebuilding makes sense. FEMA shouldn't do it--they're going to be busy with other disasters in the coming months.

Just mho.

"Why stop there. Make it cabinet level."

What this country needs is a Secretary of Hyperbole. Without one, another hundred hurricanes could hit and kill a ba-zillion people!

"Hell, let's create a Department of Earthquake Security, Department of Blizzard Security, and Department of Thunderstorm Security while we're at it."

You forgot Tornado Security.

This is how the American experiment will end; with the public demanding a string man to make things all better.

This further testifies to how unproductive and incompetent the government is. The President directed the Secretary of Homeland Security to develop and administer the "National Incident Management System" in February 2003. It took them a while, but in May of 2004, the National Incident Management System Integration Center was established within EP&R. So I don't blame the President for this.

Now, WTF are they doing over there at FEMA and DHS? We've spent tens of millions of dollars and years of planning to build a foundation of management for terrorist attacks, natural disasters, and other emergencies. What did that money and time buy us? A 57 page "strategic plan" from FEMA. And now they can't figure out who's in charge?

Whenever there's a problem, they just create another bigger problem by adding to the bureacuracy.

Correct! We even need a Department of Departments. We despararetly need a Department of Poverty to make sure that never goes away because many of the other departments are based on it.

Fellow Freepers:

At the suggestion of writer Michelle Malkin last Friday, I have cobbled together a blogsite called Texas Clearinghouse for Katrina Aid to serve as a clearinghouse for refugee efforts in Texas.

Texas is getting more refugees than any other state -- that's fine, we'll take them all -- but we need help providing them with food, clothing, medicine, and shelter. We need help taking care of their pets, too.

If you are a refugee, you can information that will help you find relief. If you want to donate or volunteer, you can find someone who needs you. Believe me, there are a lot of organizations who need your help.

Right now the site mostly covers Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas but I'm adding more every night. My wife was down at Reunion Arena in Dallas Tuesday handing out care packages and spiritually ministering to the refugees as a representative of her employer. She says that the situation is tragic and that there's a lot of work to be done. There are so many children who don't know where their parents are or even if their parents are still alive.

There are a lot of churches and other organizations in Texas that need help in dealing with the problem and I would appreciate it if you would get the word out.

Many thanks,

Michael McCullough

Stingray blogsite
