WASHINGTON, Sept 8 - Two Republican senators pressed President George W. Bush on Thursday to appoint a top official to lead the long-term recovery from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

Bush, still said to be dissatisfied with the relief effort, announced measures to help displaced Gulf Coast residents obtain benefits.

"We have much more work to do," he said. "But the people who have been hurt by this storm need to know that the government is going to be with you for the long haul."

Bush earlier met with Republican congressional leaders at the White House, where Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas and Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania urged him to pick someone to lead the administration's much-criticized recovery effort in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.

Well there's one way to cut through all the government red tape. Create another layer of bureaucracy. LOL.

you can see why the Senate produces no leaders in this country.

Its time for the president to start telling these people off - no czars, no more beauracrats - let's just stay focused on helping the evacuees and moving forward on getting things improved on the ground.

How many benefits are way to many benefits? The best benefit would be to rebuild the cities.

What the hell is wrong with this government? Whenever there's a problem, they just create another bigger problem by adding to the bureacuracy. Why don't they just get it overwith and create a "Department of Hurricane Security"? Hell, let's create a Department of Earthquake Security, Department of Blizzard Security, and Department of Thunderstorm Security while we're at it. Why not? Apparently, bureaucracy solves everything.

We have sheer idiots in this government. Especially the Democratic weasels who are now whining about the Department of Homeland Security which THEY pushed for in the first place.

Bush should appoint Teddy (hic) Kennedy - he knows all about
disasters, being one himself.

Why stop there. Make it cabinet level.

And make it independent like Hillary is suggesting to do to the head of FEMA. That way the person can answer to no one and yet have the president to answer to... -sarc

Then we'll need a "Department Czar" to run the Department of Departments.

I would not mind someone at the federal level to oversee the distribution of federal funds. The local political hacks in Louisiana have demonstrated they cannot be trusted with any federal funds. I wish Bush would enter into an agreement with Haliburton to oversee the reconstruciton project -- it would make the libs go crazy.
