Report: FEMA chief’s bio overstates experience

Top U.S. disaster official Michael Brown, under fire over the federal response to Hurricane Katrina, cited prior emergency-management experience in an official biography but his duties were “more like an intern,” Time magazine reported. Brown's biography on the Federal Emergency Management Agency Web site says he had once served as an "assistant city manager with emergency services oversight," and a White House news release in 2001 said Brown had worked for the city of Edmond, Okla., in the 1970s "overseeing the emergency-services division." However, a city spokeswoman told the magazine Brown had actually worked as "an assistant to the city manager."

Oh, so he once was "assistant city manager" but he was really assistant to the city manager. Stop the presses!

The fact remains that Brown and FEMA had their people and equipment pre-positioned ready to go before the hurricane hit. The Coast Guard was ready. The Navy was ready. The Red Cross was ready. Even the National Guard was ready.

Of the three cities in three states destroyed by the storm, only in one of the three do we hear of the kind of criminal incompetence that we have seen. Everywhere else people have simply set to work, the rescuers have fought their way in, the governors and mayors and local police and local citizens all doing what they can and more to bring order out of chaos.

The geniuses in New Orleans and Baton Rouge have failed, and there is no sugar-coating it. Brown and the normal people in Alabama and Mississippi have done what had to be done beautifully, and it will take the combined might of our news industry and the Democratic Party to hide that fact. But you can't hide it from the people who were there.

I have heard a report that 5 of the top 8 officials in FEMA were from the President's 2000 campaign or his White House advance team of that time and had no experience in disaster recovery. If this is true, that's an indictment of Pres. Bush's personnel policies. Of course, this doesn't excuse the poor performance of the local and state authorities. But, if it turns out that FEMA did not perform up to the standard of previous administrations and disasters, they should be held accountable.

Assistant to the City Manager in a smaller town is one helluva lot different than assistant city manager. In fact, being the City Manager in Edmond doesn't qualify one to head FEMA under any circumstance. Brown's appointment is indefensible, it's clearly patronage. I know everyone does it, but if FEMA is as important as we are led to believe it should be, Brown's appointment is inexcuseable. He should resign, of course.

Their resumes are irrelevant.
They were elected to office.

I'm no fan of the guy, but this particular criticism of Brown is patently ridiculous.

His resume omits the preposition "to" on a job title that he had 30 years ago; he wasn't "assistant manager", he was "assistant to the manager". Whoop-te-doo.

He was in his early 20's when he held those positions. What do you expect him to start out as a governor of a state?

Please explain in detail where FEMA screwed up! Seemed to me they did everything as prescribed in their mandate. They are not first responders, primarily coordination and follow up. They couldn't override the Governor nor the Mayor, the President couldn't.

Browns biggest problems that he is a Lawyer, and by definition they are incompetent managers. I know, I recruited lots of CEO's Directors, City Managers etc. for both the public and private sectors. When Lawyers applied I threw their resumes in the round file.

ABC News is reporting that Michael Brown will step down as director of FEMA.

If that's the case then we should be getting Blanko and Nagin's resignations as well, but you can bet the Dems will circle the wagons to protect their own.

This is pathetic. The people who are really responsible for the complete screw up of NO will probably walk away from this.

I hope that's not the case.

>Brown's appointment is indefensible, it's clearly patronage.<

He had more experience working for FEMA before he became director of the agency than any of the previous directors. He led the department during the Fla. Hurricanes.
Better check your facts before paroting the MSM line.

As it is apparent that you have no idea how silly and uneducated in the realities of political life you sound, I will tell you. You sound real silly with a bit of stupid ignorance tossed in.

Nothing personal no.

No, he's just returning to DC to resume national duties.

The attacks in NO are too political. Not wise in time of disaster. Best for him to pull out and continue his national duties and let rescue operations in NO resume without James Lee Witt having a target to shoot.

It wasn't his resume. It was a BIO. He probably never saw it, let alone read it.
