Gov. Vows to Veto Driver's License Bill
L A TIMES ^ | September 10, 2005 | Robert Salladay and Jennifer Delson

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will veto legislation approved Thursday to create a separate driver's license for illegal immigrants in California

The failure to close the issue of providing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants means another round of negotiations with Schwarzenegger, Republicans, Democratic leaders, border activists and immigration advocates over the complex and emotional issue.

State Sen. Gil Cedillo (D-Los Angeles), author of the legislation, said during debate Thursday that the licenses were the best way to "conform our laws to meet our social realities" — that illegal immigrants already are here and they are driving without being trained and tested.

In a later interview, Cedillo refused to accept Costigan's promise of a Schwarzenegger veto: "That doesn't change anything. We still expect him to sign it, to do his constitutional duty and his moral obligation. We kept our word, and we expect him to keep his."

Immigration-control advocates were pleased with Schwarzenegger's decision and said the Legislature should stop sending such bills to the governor. Mike Spence, president of the California Republican Assembly, said the veto was needed because "we have to stop rewarding illegal behavior."

Throughout negotiations on the new bill, Schwarzenegger had said he was interested in two things: a distinct California license that clearly identifies the driver as an illegal immigrant, and adherence to whatever requirements the federal Department of Homeland Security puts on such documents.

Under the Real ID Act sought by Homeland Security and signed by President Bush in May, states are allowed to grant licenses to illegal immigrants, but the license must be distinct from those used by citizens and legal residents. The separate license is required because airlines will no longer accept passengers from states that offer regular driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

Of course, conforming the social situation to the laws is out of the question for these people...

Would be nice if some of the voters punished their representatives for this stunt. No chance of that, though.

'"conform our laws to meet our social realities" — that illegal immigrants already are here and they are driving without being trained and tested.'

As if they will register. They would be fools to do so. Like registering your firearms -- records can be used later to track you down.

And isn't there a liability issue here -- the State govt knows that they are illegal (breaking Federal laws) and do nothing.

"We still expect him to sign it, to do his constitutional duty and his moral obligation."

Last I checked his "constitutional duty" was to America and Americans, but those Pro-Illegal traitors have no such obligations it seems. And thus should be sent to the Dung-Heap they love so much.

It's pure pandering by Cedillo.

All he had to do was propose differentiation (legal vs. illegal) & he would've Arnold's O.K. Yet he didn't.

Truly a politician's POLITICIAN

so according to cedillo, if a pusher is picked up after dealing for 10 years, we're supposed to give him a business license because his work is a "social reality"????? Come on people, if this cedillo is a lawyer, then he his lack of logical thinking shows he is a product of PC law school acceptance principles or affirmative action IN action.

"We still expect him to sign it, to do his constitutional duty and his moral obligation. We kept our word, and we expect him to keep his."

Huh? Did he just say that his Constitutional duty was to give special privileges to federal lawbreakers? And that the California Democrats have promised illegal aliens they'd get the licenses?

Read as: "We're the Democratic party. We support illegal immigration... In fact, we think that the Constitution should be redrafted to support the rights of illegals."

Goodbye, Dummies.

WTG Arnie, 2 to 0!

This whole thing is crazy anyway.

"The failure to close the issue of providing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants means another round of negotiation.."

Close the 'issue'... now why is this an "issue" in the first place??.. What on God's earth is there to "negotiate"?

..'provide drivers licenses to illegal immigrants' Maybe I'm nuts but that sounds ludicrous in itself..

furthermore why are they called "immigrants"?? There is no such thing as half pregnant, either you are illegally here or not.. and if your illegally in this country then why do we have to "provide" ANYTHING to them.
