In swamped New Orleans, pets need rescuing too (hopeful for dogs)

On Thursday night, there were 1,700 animals at a pet collection center set up by the Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane Society and its state branches at Gonzales, between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, Bafalas said.

Many others had already been united with their owners.

The rescuers are working off lists of stranded animals reported to hotlines by evacuated owners.

More often, they find a live animal to return to its owner. Dogs in particular, the rescue workers say, have held up well.

"We've been surprised that most of them were in good condition," said Lt. Randy Covey of the Oregon Humane Society.

"Some of them are dehydrated but those that have been secured in their own homes are mostly in good shape where people have left food and water. Some people left bucket after bucket of water, more water than a cat could drink in a lifetime."

In another thread I wondered if some animals were better off restrained pending rescue. I found it hard to believe the pictures of well kept animals who were tied up were left that way out of uncaring.

It must be a terrible decision to make.

I hope they rescue all the animals they can.

This has been a real hard day for my daughter, grandchildren and myself as we had to have a Vet come out and put our beloved Sasha, Rottweiller/Australian Shepard euthanized. She was 10 years old and all of a sudden she could not get up. We managed to get her in a sling and took her to the Vet on Thursday. He took lab tests and sent her home saying she would rest there better. The results on Friday showed all of her enzymes were elevated and the muscle enzyme which should be between 50-500 was at 25,000. She was in so much pain today and there was blood in her urine. Thankfully we were able to find a Vet to make a house call and euthanize her but a very difficult decision to make.

I'm reminded of a Far Side cartoon where the crew of a rescue boat find a liferaft with a happy, fat dog on it....

You know. I was wondering why people couldn`t take their pets out during the evacuation to the shelters, and then it hit me. Could you imagine the people in shelters with their "prized" Pitbulls and Rottweilers , etc.... And those yapping lap dogs on top of it all.

I agree with the decision to keep the dogs and other animals out, but hate to see the animals suffer like they are now.

Just another reason why I won`t get a pet anymore. After I had to put my last dog down, I just haven`t had the heart to go through that ever again ( and that was several years ago ). I have had pets all my life and the last one did it in for me. Its amazing how attached you can get to the little buggers.

I am so sorry for the loss of this precious member of your family. When my last dog died I liked to imagine him as he was younger and painless, romping in the woods. That image was a comfort to me.

I have noticed lots of footage of what appear to be pit bulls or pit mixes. They must be popular in NOLA. The ones they have shown have appeared to be very friendly dogs anxious for a human connection.

The receptiveness of many dogs to rescue, by total strangers in many cases, reminds me of how much dogs crave people.

I figured that millions of people are donating to the Red Cross, Salvation Army etc for the human victims of the hurricane, so I sent what I could to noahswish.org to take care of the stranded pets.

I saw footage of a dog jumping off a porch right into the water to "avoid" someone trying to help it. Pretty sad.

But yes, I saw alot of footage of Pit Bulls/mixes as well. I heard they are shooting alot of them down there.

I bet they are helping the ones that look to be well tempered and shooting any that appear aggresive. Can`t say I blame them for that.

I hope y'all will pray for my sister's three cats, who were in her New Orleans home when the storm hit.

They had lots of animals and ended up not being able to get the cats out. It's breaking her heart. She's registered with the rescue agencies.

As far as we can tell, there is/was 7 to 9 feet of water in that neighborhood, and the cats were in the first floor of a two-story house, with a small opening outside in an upper window.

The problem is they didn't take the storm seriously early enough. They were going to ride it out, and then Sunday morning after Nagin announced that the President called him in the middle of the night urging him to call a mandatory evacuation, they finally understood that this was no run-of-the-mill hurricane and got out. So it seems our President just may have saved my sister and boyfriend and his families' lives. Thank God.

Anyway, I'm praying for a reunion between my sister and her cats. Anyone who wants to pray for the same would be appreciated.

I must be a slow reader, but I haven't seen any mention whatever of PETA being involved in saving and serving our animal friends during hurricane Katrina and the aftermath.

That's why there should be a shelter for the animals and another for the people. Hurricanes give you lots of time for such an evacuation.

Thanks you so much for your kind thoughts. Sasha loved to play football. She also alway carried around a little stuffed animal in her mouth. It was like her baby.

That is what my daughter said she wanted to do in memory of her Sasha.

The hard core left HATES the idea of domesticated animals! They consider it slavery and anything bred by man must be a threat to the environment. When you hear of people shooting ferile cats to save the environment, or taking someone's pet crow away, it might not be PETA, but it will be lefties.

When our wonderful black lab Bruno died a couple of years ago, I didn't think I could go through the pain again with another pet. But then I started thinking about all of the poor souls in the shelter and decided one day to go visit it. Since then, we have adopted 4 dogs -- all were abused and neglected, and several cats. These dogs make the best companions; they are so grateful to have a home and belong to a family.

So, maybe some day you'll want to get a dog and you'll consider saving a life and adopt from your local animal shelter.

They could have taken them out and had the SPCA board them. I would never have left my pets. Never!
