U.S. won't ban media from New Orleans searches

CNN filed suit for right to cover search for bodies of Katrina victims

HOUSTON, Texas (CNN) -- Rather than fight a lawsuit by CNN, the federal government abandoned its effort Saturday to prevent the media from reporting on the recovery of the dead in New Orleans.

Joint Task Force Katrina "has no plans to bar, impede or prevent news media from their news gathering and reporting activities in connection with the deceased Hurricane Katrina victim recovery efforts," said Col. Christian E. deGraff, representing the task force.

U.S. District Court Judge Keith Ellison issued a temporary restraining order Friday against a "zero access" policy announced earlier in the day by Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honore, who is overseeing the federal relief effort in the city, and Terry Ebbert, the city's homeland security director.

In explaining the ban, Ebbert said, "we don't think that's proper" to let members of the media view the bodies...

Well, isn't CNN proud of itself, taking credit for the government simply following the law.

Cool! hurricane porn..Just the thing to watch at dinner time. Here are some thoughts:
9a) suits by survivors
(b) revulsion of viewers
(c) hypocrisy of refusing to show victims and jumpers on 9/11 because it would "inflame" viewers and then showing these for the obvious purpose of inflaming voters.

I do not understand CNNs insistence on this. It certainly will not score ratings points. How would you like to find out that cousin joe was dead by watching CNN? Total lack of respect.

Worth repeating.

I hope the good General keeps them on their toes. I wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of HIM, while depending on his command for info.

This also means the military won't aid the media in any way during human remains recovery.

Brian Williams said the law enforcement wouldn't let them into the Superdoom, (not a typo), or the Convention Center. They pointed their weapons at the media to keep them away from a fire scene. But, it's OK to show dead bodies... go figure.

The ghouls @ CNN are obsessed with death. Who in their right minds would actually want to look at scenes of mass death. And they have an agenda as well, because with every scene of death they will try to 'Blame' GWB, and at the same time attempt to enrage Blacks. They won't be happy until they destroy America.

I don't know who's regulating what. Spanish-language TV here in the Los Angeles area is showing dead bodies everywhere: in ditches, on roadways, on top of cars. Most are somewhat covered up but lots aren't. I think these shows are broadcast from L.A. stations but maybe the camera operators have Mexican credentials and don't have to follow U.S. law, just like the illegal border crossers.

Anyhow if it's images of dead bodies CNN wants, they've been scooped big-time. I just watched a 5-minute segment focusing on nothing but corpses.

Did anyone else see Mexico's "hurricane assistance" caravan yesterday? Two or three trucks plastered with Mexican flags on their way to N.O.; and L.A. stations were giving it huge play, as if Mexico was going to save our butts. The trucks were probably loaded with illegals. I'm sick of this stuff. You can only be subjected to so much BS propaganda before you finally lose it.

There going to find those 10,000 bodies no matter what. They know President Bush killed at least that many and they are going to find them.

Disgusting people.

There is a lawsuit somewhere in Tenn, from a girl who was shown a pic of her father who had died in a DUI related crash.

I hope the lawyers are running tape 24/7 and sue these ghouls into oblivion.

I have mixed feelings about this. Sure, I think it's obscene for a news agency to show dead bodies. But hopefully, if the news people start showing them, all the angry calls and e-mails they'll receive will take care of that little problem. Besides, the photos are already plastered everywhere at ogrish.com. (Don't go unless you have a really strong stomach and can maintain a somewhat detached psyche. It's so sad. But i digress...)

OTOH, the NOPD has already shown itself to be so corrupt, they may just need babysitting. Some of them have already joined in the looting. If they had free reign to people's homes & knew they wouldn't be filmed (i.e., caught red-handed), who knows what they would do? I'm sure there are plenty of empty 2-story homes with high-and-dry possessions that aren't nailed down.

Also, after seeing some idiot Gestapo policeman/NG/whatever tackle an elderly lady in her own kitchen the other day... Sheesh! What if the cameras hadn't been there? If someone had been seriously hurt, it would have been a he-said, she-said type of deal. I just think both parties are better off having their forays into people's homes documented to keep everyone honest.
