PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: After the President and First Lady attended church in Washington this morning, they participated in a September 11, 2001 rememberance and moment of silence on the White House lawn. GWB then headed for New Orleans where he touched down mid-afternoon. He will be spending the night aboard the USS Iwo Jima, which is docked in New Orleans harbor near downtown.

The President was met by New Orleans Mayor Nagin, but Gov. Kathleen Blanco was not present.

Patriot Day 2005 Proclamation

A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

Four years have passed since our country was brutally attacked on a quiet September morning. On that day, thousands of innocent lives were taken from us. The victims and the families who lost loved ones remain in the hearts and prayers of our Nation. We also remember the courage of the firefighters, police officers, emergency rescue personnel, and scores of private citizens who showed us the true meaning of heroism and demonstrated our resolve to the world.

The mission that began on September 11, 2001, continues. Today, we see the virtue of the September 11th heroes embodied in our military personnel, who are taking the fight to our enemies and helping to keep us safe at home. Thousands of other Americans, from intelligence analysts to border guards to countless others, are doing vital work to help defend America and prevent future attacks. We are grateful to all of these men and women and to their families for their service and sacrifice. We honor those who have lost their lives defending our freedom, and we pray that God comfort their families. We pledge that we will not rest until we have won the war on terror.

As we mark this solemn anniversary, I call upon all our citizens to express their patriotism and their gratitude for the blessings of liberty. By flying the flag, supporting military families, and teaching young people about our founding ideals, we honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and since, and we help preserve our freedom for future generations.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107 89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day."

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2005, as Patriot Day. I call upon the Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, as well as appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half staff on Patriot Day. I call upon the people of the United States to observe Patriot Day with appropriate ceremonies and activities, including remembrance services, to display the flag at half staff from their homes on that day, and to observe a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. eastern daylight time to honor the innocent victims who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this ninth day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirtieth.

GEORGE W. BUSH

I'm deliberately posting this thread late in order to get some of the photos of GWB in New Orleans for us.

For those who may not have seen it, yet, you might be interested in this thread: Katrina, a photographic timeline: Powerful proof federal response was NOT slow (warning, many pics)

This thread has received among the highest number of hits ever on FR: 502 replies, but an amazing 25,936+ hits (as of a couple of minutes ago). I want to thank FReeper ThePythonicCow for preserving the entire thread and its photos on a server. He has also created a .zip file so anyone can download the thread for use in spreading the word. The link for the .zip file can be found somewhere around post #480 on the thread.

The President leaving the WH for New Orleans today. He looked more rested and chipper than he did a couple of days ago.

President Bush shares a laugh with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin upon his arrival at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in New Orleans. I happened to see his arrival live on CNN. What was extremely interesting to me was this: A heavy-set, older man was standing with Nagin as the President deplaned AF1. The President ignored Nagin for several minutes while he spoke vigorously and at length with that man, who was not identified by the CNN reporter. (I havn't been able to find a photo that includes him.) Only after the President had completed his conversation with that man did he turn around and greet Nagin. It was almost like an afterthought. The following photos were taken as the two walked to Marine 1 for the flight to the Iwo Jima.

President Bush moments after landing on the USS Iwo Jima. He is seen here with Coast Guard Vice Admiral Thad Allen, who is now in charge of the federal disaster management in the disaster area.

This wider shot shows Vice Admiral Allen, New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, and Lt. Gen. Russ Honore with the President.

With flight deck crew on the Iwo Jima.

A funny little incident: One of the flight deck crew handed the President a digital camera and asked for a photo. The President handed the camera to the Vice Admiral (LOL!), who took the picture. An extraordinarily rare time when a grunt sailor got a Vice Admiral do his bidding thanks to the POTUS.

As you can see, GWB kept talking to the sailor while he quite casually handed the camera to Allen. (Double LOL!)

EVERYONE:

"The Flight that Fought Back" about Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania on 9/11 is showing on Discovery Channel at 9 pm Eastern time...

THAT's in about 20 minutes from now for those on SATELLITE or EAST COAST VIEWERS.

A FReeper's Dad was on this flight. He got to preview it, and wants everyone to watch. Some of the calls from the plane and the communications with the plane (but not all, as some are too tough for TV) are played during the film.

Please everyone, watch!

We want to reward Discovery for showing this film, and also honor those who gave us the gift of national honor with their deaths.

Waving to supporters. The President was being escorted directly inside the Iwo Jima, but he turned away from the big brass accompanying him, and went to greet the sailors. There was only a small group on deck, but he made a point of greeting each of them.

For the many animal lovers on the Dose...

Rescuers are trying to catch as many abandoned pets they can. Many are being saved, but many have died. Many are frightened and don't go to rescuers right away. In this sad photo, two little dogs run past a house with a tragic note from rescuers. On a bright note, I did watch a live rescue of a large black Lab or Lab mix. A male who was initially frightened of the boat, but the rescuers gently lured him in with food, then slipped a rope leash on him. The Human Society is coordinating animal rescues, as well as their post-rescue care.
