Up For Grabs: Sociologists Question How Much Looting And Mayhem Really Took Place In New Orleans
The Boston Globe ^ | 9/11/2005 | Christopher Shea

Posted on 09/12/2005 6:13:03 PM PDT by steve-b

By now the images and stories of looting and mayhem in New Orleans--the residents "shopping" for nonessentials in an abandoned Wal-Mart, alleged rapes in the Superdome, a shot fired at a rescue helicopter -- have been burned into the brain of every television watcher and newspaper reader in America. But do they give us an accurate picture of the aftermath of the flood?

In fact, if criminal violence were indeed rampant in New Orleans after Katrina hit (setting aside the taking of food, water, bandages, and other necessities of survival), that would contradict much of what sociologists have learned in a half century of research about such situations. "The evidence is overwhelming," says Enrico Quarantelli, an emeritus professor of sociology and the founding director of the Disaster Research Center at the University of Delaware, "that in the standard natural disaster or technological disaster"--like a chemical spill -- "you're not going to get looting."...

Who are you going to beleive -- the expert sociologists, or your untrained eyes?

I certainly would not beleive ANYTHING from the Globe relative to ANY politicized event -- such as this disaster. The only people I would believe about the looting the store owners. Only they will know what ACTUALLY disappeared. Not a bunch of "sociologists".

The only thing less honest than an liberal actor is a liberal (semi-retired) professor. I wonder if the good professor "corrected for the race of the local residents" of each disaster, as they say in the statistical trade.

More importantly, how many priceless historical artifacts were looted from the French Quarter Museum, Saloon & Cathouse?

I guess because I wasn't there, maybe there was no hurricane at all. I'm sure I could find statistics to support my opinion.

In a media frenzy, what your eyes see is not always trustworthy, either.

I think I'll trust long term studies that have some numbers behind them. It's simply not likely that I'll ever buy into a single picture ~ recalling at the moment the very finely crafted photo of Pope Paull II with his hand on Hillary's butt.

These guys do setups for video that are quite artful ~ and are getting much better.

Best to not believe what you see.

Yup, no looting, just bandages etc ...

... except for every store that didn't have a shotgun behind its door.

Personally, I question how many sociologists were on the ground during the flood to see anything at all.

LMAO

Pinhead Professors Alert

I wonder how a "verdict" fits in to their study.

I was an eyewitness to the "looting party" that went on for several days in Los Angeles.

I watched cars pull in to a shopping center, the whole family pile out and head into the stores for all they could carry. They all seemed so happy, scary.

According to the psych "profession," maybe rather it was all just "partying."

How could a half century or serious Marxist ideology be allowed to be contradicted by pictures and cams.

It is my theory that had the levies not failed and the the city not been flooded, there would have been much more looting.

I wonder what the sociologists would that about that?
