City officials are teaming with the Tamaulipas state secretary of health to control and prevent the spread of illnesses such as dengue fever, which is trasmitted by the aedes aegypti fly.
Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by female flies, and anyone infected by the fly is infectious to others for the first three days and should be quarantined, authorities said.
The general symptoms of the sickness are: high fever, headaches, bone and eye soreness and skin rashes. Anyone showing symptoms of the disease should seek medical attention immediately.
In June, Mayor Baltazar Hinojosa Ochoa launched the first part of a program to clean up 40 neighborhoods that are considered high-risk for dengue and similar types of infections, according to a press release from the city.
On Sept. 6, the program was extended to 60 more neighborhoods, with city and state officials to remove vessels that could serve as mosquito breeding grounds.
Officials recommended these measures to prevent mosquito and fly proliferation: Change plant water every three days Cover all water containers and spouts Install mosquito repellant lights in windows and doors Dispose of empty tires and anything that can be used as a receptacle for water.
They added that keeping a clean, swept, trimmed yard diminishes the risk of contracting dengue.
