Cross-border effort targets dengue [S. Texas/Mexico]

— City officials are teaming with the Tamaulipas state secretary of health to control and prevent the spread of illnesses such as dengue fever, which is trasmitted by the aedes aegypti fly.

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by female flies, and anyone infected by the fly is infectious to others for the first three days and should be quarantined, authorities said.

The general symptoms of the sickness are: high fever, headaches, bone and eye soreness and skin rashes. Anyone showing symptoms of the disease should seek medical attention immediately.

In June, Mayor Baltazar Hinojosa Ochoa launched the first part of a program to clean up 40 neighborhoods that are considered high-risk for dengue and similar types of infections, according to a press release from the city.

On Sept. 6, the program was extended to 60 more neighborhoods, with city and state officials to remove vessels that could serve as mosquito breeding grounds.

Officials recommended these measures to prevent mosquito and fly proliferation: — Change plant water every three days — Cover all water containers and spouts — Install mosquito repellant lights in windows and doors — Dispose of empty tires and anything that can be used as a receptacle for water.

They added that keeping a clean, swept, trimmed yard diminishes the risk of contracting dengue.

I had Dengue fever once, in 1975. Had a fever of, I think, 104, so high that sounds were warped and distorted. Was as weak as a kitten for many days, and skin broke out in a horrid rash. Lost probably about ten pounds. I was young and tough, and weathered it with the help of some medicine the doc prescribed for me.

What I have always wondered: Does that now make me immune to any further bouts with Dengue? Anyone here know?

I had dengue fever about ten years ago (thought I was a goner -- they call it bone break fever for a reason as I am sure you know). The Doc's told me that there are different strains or types and you can acquire immunity for one still be liable to get the other three. Makes me real spooky around mosquitoes -- day and night.
