Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee commandeers Sam's Wal-Mart stores (and fires AWOL cops)
Times-Picayune ^ | Sept 11, 2005 | Staff

...On other topics, Lee said he had 40 deputies who didn't report for duty for the storm. One who tried to return was told not to waste his time.

"As far as I am concerned (he) will never get a job in law enforcement again," Lee said.

--------------(With regard to Walmart)

[Sheriff] Lee said he took the action after he learned that a Wal-Mart store wanted to open recently but was told by FEMA officials that it could not.

Lee said he gave handwritten notes to Wal-Mart stores in Harvey and Kenner saying they were ordered to open as soon as possible. Lee said Parish President Aaron Broussard agreed with the decision. Lee said anyone from FEMA who tries to close either store will be arrested by deputies.

One of the AWOL cops had the nerve to try to get his job back? It's highly unlikely that AWOL New Orleans LEO's will be dealt with as harshly.

I reversed the story because the FEMA part was boring.

What power does FEMA have to regulate commerce? I'm suspect of this.

So would he support the cops getting jobs at that Wal-Mart?

"was told by FEMA officials"

I'm willing to bet it wasn't FEMA, but the Lousiana Deptment of Homeland Security!

Either that, or one of the people who stole FEMA jackets and have been posing as a FEMA worker.

There was another story about him firing two more cops who looted at that Walmart.

It was probably the State Board of Health or state Dept of Homeland Security.

I'd have arrested them.

I like this guy.

This is the man that ordered no foot traffic over the I-10 bridge into Jefferson County. Make of it what you want, but he probably prolonged the suffering of many folks.

When the other 39 get back from Vegas they will be disappointed.

I am sure the good Governor will intervene on their behalf and order their reinstatement in good standing.

Depends: If they are white cops they will be fired , If black they will be put back on duty and charged annual leave.

You dont believe that?? Lets wait and see.

Local and state FEMA officials have been acting like storm troopers, sullying the name of the folks who saved their tales when they (the locals) could/would not save themselves.

That said, it is amazing how so many locals managed to get to high ground when things got bad.

"I think for some reason he did not understand the full magnitude of this on the front end," Nagin said.

Nagin is saying this regarding Bush! When Bush told them to evacuate and they waited. Nagin is the one that didn't fully 'get it'. And he doesn't want interference from outsiders in rebuilding NO. Nagin's the one that should be out of a job. All he is good for is twiddling his thumbs and pointing his finger, IMO. Devoid of any leadership skills.

A mayor of a town with no people in it? I'd say he already was. He must think so as well, becaue he's moved to Dallas, bought a house and enrolled his daughter in school there.

That bridge is not a way out of N.O. as much as it is a way into Jefferson Parish. A parish that was evacuated and sealed. He did the right thing. They were high and dry on I-10 and the west bank was more secure

Gosh, I'm not a lawyer but how exactly does some government employee have the right to order a private business to open its door?? Maybe the Parish President could just 'order' Walmart to give away its inventory for the next 30 days as well. Since they have already started well down the road to socialism, they might as well make it a comfortable road.

Unless things have changed in Louisiana the Sheriff is the top government official in the parish and his word is law. Always good to have the Sheriff on your side in LA.

Gosh, I'm not a lawyer either and didn't comment on this aspect. I was addressing the closing of the bridge

The sheriff told FEMA to leave Walmart alone to get back to bussiness, also gave the Walmart management a letter to that effect & standing orders to his deputies that any FEMA official that tries to force them to close down is to be arrested.
