The Port of New Orleans and WHY We Must Rebuild!
Various ^ | 9/15/05 | Various

Posted on 09/15/2005 7:44:41 PM PDT by Calpernia

Located at the mouth of Mississippi River, the Port of New Orleans is America’s gateway to the global market. New Orleans has been a center for international trade since 1718.

Today, the Port of New Orleans is at the center of the world’s busiest port complex — Louisiana’s Lower Mississippi River. Its proximity to the American Midwest via a 14,500-mile inland waterway system makes New Orleans the port of choice for the movement of cargoes such as steel, grain, containers and manufactured goods.

The Port of New Orleans is the only deepwater port in the United States served by six class one railroads. This gives port users direct and economical rail service to or from anywhere in the country.

New Orleans is one of America’s leading general cargo ports. A productive and efficient private maritime industry has help produce impressive results, including the USA’s top market share for import steel, natural rubber, plywood and coffee.

In the last 10 years, the Port of New Orleans has invested more than $400 million in new state-of-the-art facilities. Improved breakbulk and container terminals feature new multipurpose cranes, expanded marshalling yards and a new roadway to handle truck traffic.

Maritime activity within the Port of New Orleans is responsible for more than 107,000 jobs, $2 billion in earnings, $13 billion in spending and $231 million in taxes statewide.

The Port of New Orleans has also been a defined area where foreign merchandise gets brought into the country without being immediately subject to the usual U.S. Customs regulations!!!

Various snips from import and export sites.

New Orleans, if not rebuilt; it is subject to an enemy land grab. This is a vital port and BORDER to the USA.

Louisiana Officials are already being investigated for laundering, corruption, human trafficking and having business deals and lobster meals with Fidel Castro.

Thank the corrupt officials for creating this situation. We have to clean up the mess.

We need the port. But will we rebuild a slum for the welfare class as well?

No. We'll give them vouchers to move to your bedroom community in Missouri.

Feel better now?

We better not. Alot of that slum life should be cleaned up once the investigations are over.

Thank the Plantation Princesses for that mess!

There's a lot of money to be made in that port. Commies aren't going to take over.

The government needs to butt out and let American businessmen do business.

Funny how none of the Cast Iron Conservatives realize how much Fed Tax REVENUE is being lost everyday that area is devastated. Funny how often "Fiscal Conservatives" are are pennywise and pound foolish. It isn't just the 3 states, it is a whole lot of river traffic to and from the whole Midwest. Sitting on our butts doing NOTHING, as the "Fiscal Conservatives" advocate, actually GROWS the deficit because of the reductions in tax income.

Why rebuild, almost every expert predicts at some point in the future, New Orleans will not have the Mississippi River flowing there? New River Project is an even greater economic disaster waiting in the wings, and happen it will.

Government money should be spent only on infrastructure above surge level, but who's to say the Mississippi levee itself wouldn't be breached someday and wash everything away. The whole thing seems a great risk. Maybe now's the time to bite the bullet, spend the taxpayer money upstream at Baton Rouge, abandon NOLA and let the river find it's natural course.

I lived for ten years across the street from a Section 8 house. It was marginally less attractive than the rest of the neighborhood.

That said, I'd rather see these people dispersed across the country than consolidated into a new 'hive of scum and villany,' reformed with government largesse to have 10x the average crime rate and 3x the unemployment.

Then build a port. You honestly believe rebuilding the french quarter will provide security? Gay mardi gras is our secret weapon? Puhlease.

What about changing the welfare class as we know it? Can you at least imagine the hope and possibility of it?

Yup, nobody pays more taxes than a slum-dwelling poor person. Rebuild the slums! We need the money! The $200 BILLION will be repaid in no time!

>>> Commies aren't going to take over.

That remains to be seen. I wasn't privy to the lobster dinners that Blanco had with Fidel Castro. I'm also not privy to the percentage Castro owns in New Orleans G&F Sex Tours.
