Son of Florida Gov. Bush Arrested

AUSTIN, Texas - The youngest son of Florida Gov.Jeb Bush was arrested early Friday and charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest, law enforcement officials said.

John Ellis Bush, 21, shown in this photo provided by the Austin, Texas Police Department, was arrested early Friday morning, Sept. 16, 2005, in Austin and charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest, a Travis County Sheriff's Department spokesman said. John Ellis Bush, 21, was arrested by agents of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission at 2:30 a.m. on a corner of Austin's Sixth Street bar district, said commission spokesman Roger Wade.

The nephew ofPresident Bush was released on $2,500 bond for the resisting arrest charge, and on a personal recognizance bond for the public intoxication charge, officials said.

Wade said he had no further details about the charges.

Gov. Bush and his wife Columba appeared Friday evening at a museum reception in Miami.

"My son's doing fine. It's a private matter. We will support him. We're sad for him. But I'm not going to discuss it on the public square with 30 cameras," the governor told reporters.

It's not the first time Florida's first family has experienced legal problems with one of their children.

Noelle Bush, the governor's daughter, was arrested in January 2002 and accused of trying to pass a fraudulent prescription at a pharmacy to obtain the anti-anxiety drug Xanax. She completed a drug rehabilitation program in August 2003 and a judge dismissed the drug charges against her.

From the other thread, young Bush approached the Texas ABC guys to inquire about a previous arrest of some friends. I doubt they took too kindly to having their authority questioned and thus his fate was sealed.

"arrested by agents of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission "

I didn't know it was their job to arrest people.

Nice looking kid. When did George P. have trouble with the law? Their SISTER got in trouble with drugs. Don't recall George, the Youngest, getting arrested.

Yes, he is George P.'s brother but to the best of my knowledge, George has never been in trouble with the law.

PI (Public Inotoxication) is a Class C Misdemeanor in Texas; equivalent to a speeding ticket. Why would the kid do a stupid thing like resist arrest, which is a serious crime, over a Class C?

Maybe because he was intoxicated.

"I didn't know it was their job to arrest people."

Oh yes. As a matter of fact, they are one of only two law enforcement agencies in Texas who can enter a home without a search warrant; the other being Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission. TABC can arrest a person for any crime; not just those that are alcohol related. They have a lot of authority.

Exactly. This is not news. He's not underage, not under Jeb's authority and this didn't even happen in Florida!

This story only has 'legs' because it's a anti-Bush smear.
