CAPITOL UPDATE - volunteer auxiliary to help the U.S. Border Patrol enforce immigration laws

BORDER VOLUNTEERS -- An unarmed, volunteer auxiliary to help the U.S. Border Patrol enforce immigration laws would be established under a bill introduced by Rep. Thelma Drake, R-2nd.

The auxiliary would be modeled after the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

"We are currently facing a crisis on our borders," Drake said in a statement. "The Minuteman Project proved that private citizens are concerned to the point that they are willing to offer their own time and energy to the effort of protecting our borders."

Auxillary is a good word when it comes to national defense.

More Republicans in public offices with enough political clout to make a difference are understanding the sheer size of the border crisis challenge and bringing forward viable solutions . .

What's this UNARMED crap?

They should receive free, and regular training from the Border Patrol, AND, should be armed with, AT LEAST, handguns (even better would be riot shotguns or AR-15's, or other similar weapons used by the Border Patrol themseleves) for personal protection, just like the Minuteman guys.

Take 10 billion from the Katrina funds, off set that by monitoring LA corruption, and build the wall.

Agreed. Unarmed = ineffective. A Mexican coyote isn't going to give a tinker's damn about some guy in a crosswalk guard uniform yelling, "Stop or I'll tell on you!"

This just looks like an attempt to shut down the Minutemen. "Now that we have our unarmed auxiliary, we don't need you anymore."

"Drake said volunteers for a Border Patrol Auxiliary could help notify Border Patrol agents of illegal-immigrant crossings, give first aid to detained immigrants and do administrative work."

Fantastic. Bush has finally agreed to "work with Congress" on this, meaning he might sign a bill if it was delivered to his desk but won't lift a finger to make it happen. Proposing a bill like this is an important step, though passage seems unlikely to me. Even the fact of this proposed bill gives legitimacy to Minutemen et all.

Drake should be targeted for special national help from Conservatives, in this bill and in re-election. There are likely to be difficulties in that regard. We have to take care of people like this because our enemies will surely try to defeat them in every possible way.

To exit from my Ping list, just send me one request to that effect, public or private.

How about they do what everyone has been asking for years:
1. Allow state and local police to enforce immigration issues.
2. Increase the presence of border control on the border.
3. Give border control greater latitude to be able to arrest illegals.
4. Hold employers accountable with criminal and civil penalties.
5. Hold state's and cities accountable.
6. Create tent cities to hold illegal immigrants to vastly increase capacity.
7. Hold Mexico accountable for knowingly allowing illegals to cross.
8. Build a wall and motion detectors. Include razor-wire and electrified fences.
9. Imprison people who lead and support the invasion.
10. Withhold all government benefits to illegals. Since this is a national security problem, fine any agency that help the illegals.

Ditto! Asking citizens to "volunteer" to watch the border is a clear display that our national leaders don't give a crap and don't want to spend the money to secure our borders or enforce laws on the books.

$60Bn got approved by Congress in a single day without knowing where it will come from or where it will be spent.

Yet in a time of war against an elusive, suicidal, and fanatical enemy, our government allows thousands of unknown people to wander into America every day, and then have the gall to suggest we forgive them and allow them to stay and work.

An unarmed, volunteer auxiliary to help the U.S. Border Patrol enforce immigration laws?? WTF?? Homeland Security is a JOKE, and our enemies know it!

agreed 100% joke. If a terror attack happens on W's watch and it was proved it came from the southern border the Republican are out of office in the next election. Period. Katrina showed that the American people will not stand for knowingly endangering lives due to lack of political will to fix problems. The Republicans are gambling all they have earned over the course of the last 25 years to give companies cheap labor. It is not a good gamble. IMO

An unarmed, volunteer auxiliary to help the U.S. Border Patrol enforce immigration laws... volunteers for a Border Patrol Auxiliary could help notify Border Patrol agents of illegal-immigrant crossings, give first aid to detained immigrants and do administrative work.

All I see this doing is taking away the Minuteman Project's autonomy and putting them under government control thus rendering them ineffectual. I vote No.

Take 10 billion from the Katrina funds, off set that by monitoring LA corruption, and build the wall.

If the OBVIOUSLY "intelligent" people of NO put the SAME demonRAT scumbags back in office (Nagin, Blanco, Landrieu, etc.) that helped CAUSE all their woes in the first place, then - out of 200 billion, wasting or stealing 10 billion from the Katrina funds is a CONSERVATIVE estimate.

I LIKE your thinking on the wall though.

Hope the bill is DOA, UNLESS it contains language or amendments which address the fact that ANY force, whether local, state, federal, volunteer, or auxilliary, MUST be armed, at a MINIMUM - for self-protection.

Otherwise, it is a waste of time, and the Minutemen should keep doing their good work to force our legislators to do what is necessary and right.

Nothing surprises me any more about the governments capacity to fubar constitutionally protected initiatives: .....or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
