Making The Move From CD to iPod
New Jersey.com ^ | September 18, 2005 | Allan Hoffman

I am giving up CDs. Within the next several months, I expect most of my family's CDs will be converted for playing on our iPods and personal computers. The actual CDs will either be sold or given away. As more people connect their digital music players to their home stereos and car stereos, they realize they have no use for the racks of CDs taking up space in their homes. If you no longer play CDs, why keep them? That is the conclusion my wife and I reached, and that is why I am completing the arduous process of moving the music to more compact computer storage from the CDs.

I don't have one. So far the ones I've seen are way too expensive.

Since you're not planning to buy an iPod, drop that coin on a pair of Bose Quiet Comfort headphones. I got them for my husband who travels quite a bit and they are AMAZING! They don't quiet things so much that it's unsafe, but they cut down the ambient noise considerably!

I got an iPod for Christmas and it wasn't something I necessarily wanted. But once I started using it, I have found it indispensable. I especially love to use it for audio books and to use as a voice recorder with an iTalk.

I recently added the iTrip to my iPod. It plays through any FM receiver--car, home, etc.. We have a Bose Sound Dock for the iPods and a Bose Wave Radio and that darn iTrip makes the radio into a sound dock. Now I wish we hadn't wasted the $299.00 although the Sound Dock is a nifty little gadget as well.

The iTrip is fantastic!

My complaint about the iTrip is that in a heavily populated area, there is no "empty" space in the FM band to set the tuner to. A frequency that's "clear" at home has interference at the office, so 1) I can't get a clear, consistent signal on my commute; 2) I have to break out of a playlist to re-set the frequency from one location to another.

There is nothing more annoying than having to listen to overhead speakers blasting some disco garbage while exercising in the gym.

That is exactly the reason why I started using an iPod at the gym -- so I could listen to my own music and tune theirs out.

Then when the drives get fried from overheating, you can have the pleasure of losing everything.

Instead, but a FW drive with fans. The heatsink enclosure on those is less than adequate, as many users can testify.

You don't need to be a music afficianado.

They put most of the major speeches from the past RNC convention onto the iTunes store and I have them all on my iPod. I also have some of Ronald Reagan's speeches off of a CD that I got from the Reagan Ranch.

Sometimes I think I must be the only person left who doesn't have one and doesn't feel the need for one.

Amazingly enough you aren't - they guy who posted just before you said the exact same thing :)

For cars, you can always get the adaptor for the tape player in the car. I suppose I should get an iTrip though, because much to my annoyance, we've rented cars without tape players.

Yeah, I'm not going to go through life with white ear plugs sticking out of each ear either - and certainly not if it means supporting/endorsing a company like Apple.

I bought the first Sony walkman, still have it, hardly ever used it. I just don't need to listen to music all the time.

That said, I can se where having an i-pod in the cr would be useful as my cd player only holds 5 or 6 cds, it would be nice to have 1,000's of songs available.

Teach me to speak without checking. I was familiar with the shuffle, the Ipod and the mini, and more or less took my best guess with the Nano. Lesson learned.

Sorry, I've got two Creative players in the house, and neither sounds as good as my Ipod. They were better options for my children though.

I'm amazed how durable the new Nano is.
