Battle for school site taints day (Eminent Domain threatens Jewish private school)
The Atlanta Journal/Constitution ^ | 9/19/2005 | Paul Donsky

Colorful balloons bobbed in the breeze. A huge banner reading "The Weber School" lay across a backhoe. A large tent teemed with people eating cake.

The groundbreaking ceremony Sunday afternoon was supposed to celebrate the start of construction of the private Jewish high school's 18-acre campus in Sandy Springs.

Instead, a mood of uncertainty and apprehension mixed with the hot late-summer air as parents and school officials grappled with the realization that all the plans they've made may be in jeopardy.

The Fulton County school system wants to buy the Weber School site and use the land to build a new elementary school. In a strongly worded letter sent earlier this month, the school district indicated that unless Weber sold the property by today, the school board would use eminent domain to obtain the land.

The State knows best. Better a State school than a private, religious school. /sarcasm

Eminent domain: we might as well give them all crowns and proclaim the courts king.

Everyone who thinks the govt would treat a Moslem school the same way, raise your hand.

You raise an interesting point. I wonder if Muslim sources have influential ties to the school system there.

Since when can a school board declare eminent domain? I thought they had to acquire ground in the same way I do. That is to buy it.

I emailed the school district and told them they need to change their motto from "where kids come first" to "where kids come first unless they are Jewish". We'll see if I get a response. I won't hold my breath...

If we could examine the voting & donation history of the private school board members & the attending families, do you think that they would be wildly skewed toward liberal / intrusive govt candidates or toward Kelo supporters?

More important question, will the voting & donation pattern change in the future?

This might be a racial thing where black run Fulton county is trying to mess with the Jews. And there are a lot of Jews in Atlanta and nearby suburbs. I have relatives there. Many Jews in the small town south made their way to Atlanta

No, McNinny's district in on the east side of town in DeKalb County.

This property is located in Sandy Springs, an affluent suburb of Atlanta and just recently a city incorporated in its own right (now separate from the City of Atlanta). I know that the parents and friends of the school have been planning to build this campus and raising money for years. The Fulton County school board can't find another piece of land to grab or preferably buy from a willing buyer?
