Group Wants Special Status for Illegals Affected by Katrina

Illegal immigrants affected by Hurricane Katrina should have "protected humanitarian status," representatives of Latin American and Caribbean communities said Tuesday in an appeal to the White House.

The groups said the protection is needed because immigrants fearing deportation, including some with U.S.-born children, are not seeking help at shelters because officials are asking for Social Security numbers in order to enter.

"The immigrants are the invisible victims of the hurricane," said Gloria Saucedo, of Hermandad Mexicana of Los Angeles, Calif., whose group is a member of the National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities, which is pushing for immigration reform.

Although the Bush administration has urged all refugees to seek help regardless of status, three undocumented immigrants flown to El Paso were ordered to appear for deportation hearings and two immigrants who rode a bus with other evacuees in West Virginia have been taken into custody.

In the past, some Central American immigrants have been granted temporary protected status following natural disasters in that region of Latin America. That provides the immigrants temporary legal status and the ability to work in the United States.

"If federal authorities are using this as an enforcement opportunity, it creates a moral dilemma for us in how do we advise our constituents," Cecilia Munoz, vice president of policy for the National Council of La Raza, the largest U.S.-based Hispanic advocacy group, said Monday.

We should give them all 1 million apiece, a new beach house, and 2 new cars. Oh yea, they should get automatic citizenship since they were in the country illegally and had to endure Bush's hurricane.

Tag not needed. (It) should be dripping from the comment.

I suggest the illegals and the welfare cases get off their collective butts, get a shovel and GO HELP. Maybe then we can gag up enough respect for you..and perhaps want to help..until then..kiss off.

Worthless pieces of sheet.

Yes, "special status" - "deportation"

Of course, if they hadn't been here in the first place, they wouldn't have been affected by the hurricane, so technically it's their own fault. :-P

Why do we tolerate groups such as these that advocate breaking the law.

Me too!

Let's round up ALL illegals and get them the hell out before they cost any more.

$200 billion is bad enough (we can do nothing about it at this point) to spend on rebuilding NO. That's enough for $200,000 for each resident.

To have to spend more billions on illegals is stomach churning.

I'm sure they're aggressively demanding that Mexico open its southern border.

Every individual named in the above story described as an "advocate for illegals" or belonging to any such organization should have been taken into federal custody on felony charges of abetting illegal immigration yesterday.

After they have spent six months in the disease infected New Orleans area working to clean it up we will kindly and graciously allow them to exit the country and get in line behind those who are attempting to immigrate here LEGALLY.

Wouldn't need help if they weren't here illegally. Being that, they should have jail time and then deportation.

I want special status for them too. How about simply deporting them? That seems to be a special status for illegals.

They were here 'visiting' in our country during Bush's storm. I say we give them all their own ranches in Texas.

Too little too late. But that' sabout all we can expect from a man who wants to give them legal status.

Illegal is still illegal. I don't have a problem with giving the humanitarian aid but they're still illegal aliens.
