...and considering these scriptures, how is it that some people are surprised Christians have solid, clear-cut beliefs about who will go to Heaven and who will go to Hell?

Being a "scientist" is a different category than being a "Christian".

The rabbi is understood from the context of his statement. Bet he even talks like the Baptists and the Methodists are same as the Catholics ~ I've met his type! Fortunately not all rabbis are like that.

Believe things because they are true.

The minister does sound like he was out of line but I would not trust the Washington Post to report the event accurately.

The point being it is not Christians, nor the way they interpret scripture, nor the fact that a person may belong to a particular ethnic group, that determines if they go to hell or not but the Word of God.

The statement I was addressing was the one made that it was El Cid's own interpretation that he was promoting and not necessarily what was in the scripture.

I simply stated that it was not El Cid's private interpretation but actual quotes from the scripture and Jesus Himself.

Ok. How does that detract from the semantic point I made?

It differs in the sense that "being a scientist" is passive ~ you are, or you aren't, and you can't undo it. On the other hand, if you are a "Christian", that something that requires continual action on your part. Not only that, you might well return to your former state as an unrepenetant sinner (for example ~ there are, of course, other ways to undo your status as a Christian).

Not all nouns are the same~!

Of course WE know that.
But those who do not believe Christ to begin with are not likely to believe the Word of God either on these topics either.
