Oh, by all means, let's do have a commission. I can't wait to see it in writing that the Governors of each state are responsible for calling out the National Guard, that state and local officials are responsible for evacuations. Yes, let's do have a committee.

My husband, not 20 minutes ago, before I read this, said someone will be wondering why TX is better prepared. Looks like he was right.

He also said that they are better prepared because:

1. Learned from Katrina

2. More competenant (sp) local/state government.

3. And busses actually do drive on Sunny days.

If the Hurricane hits a Blue area it is Oh the humanity, blame Bush, and lets start doling out $200 Billion.

If it hits a Red area, well, those people had it coming, what did they expect living along the Gulf Coast? They can clean up their own mess.

Whatever happens with Rita, and let's all pray it weakens before landfall, an objective study and comparison of hurricanes in 2004-05 across Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas will show that the major weakness was the grossly corrupt and incompetent local and state officials for NOLA and Louisiana. Texas will do much better with Rita, no matter how bad it gets, because they have no Nagin or Blankhead, or generations of Landrieus and Edwin Edwards and lots of other scumbag useless 'Rat officials.

I think Reid is one of the Whit brothers. I'm just not sure if he's Dim, Nit, or Half.

Good post. In my estimation, the problem on the left/in the democratic party extends well beyond the local idiots in Louisiana. They are a microcosm. The real truth is that the current so-called leaders of the democratic party are a collection of the unaccomplished. They are not intellects, nor are they skilled legislators. They are simply loud mouths from very secure liberal elective districts and practice cheap and tawdry politics. That's all they know and are capable of. The "Louisiana Three" are an example of what happens when such unqualifieds are thrust into the requirement of leadership and execution. Abject failure.

"It's nice to have the Bush administration recognize the importance of a federal response to Rita, but why weren't they proactively mobilizing and organizing like this for Katrina?" said Rebecca Kirszner, a spokeswoman for Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada.

Keep asking that question, sweetie. It'll keep giving us an excuse to cram the answer back down your darn throat.

Quite right. My son-in-law, a professional firefighter was dispatched to assist Katrina evacuees coming into the area and now is gearing up for wherever needed for this one.

I was in LE starting in '73, assisted in numerous evacuations on the lower Texas coast, never had a real problem. No one shot at us--better not have...

We've been doing this for many years instead of be-boppin' on Bourbon Street and snortin' coke.

Also, our former Governor set an excellent example. He left the State in really good shape to handle these situations.

Hmmmm. Could be a good talking point. Did W handle any fair size storms during his term as governor? Anyone know how well they organized evacuations and response for them? Did they "learn any lessons" and institute any fixes that we are now seeing with regard to his foresight in having emergency preparedness for the State of Texas?

I for one would like to know. Was the ability to get the Astrodome ready so quickly to handle the NOLA evacuees the result of plans made by the present Governor or did he implement a plan made by the former administration?

You sure opened up a good line of inquiry.

Reid Questions Why TX so Ready?

For the same reason that Florida, Mississippi, and Alabama are always ready - Texas isn't run by a dlueless, corrupt democrat administration.

Dem's couldn't wait till this latest hurricane hit before claiming that when whites are the target things go different.
Hold it, and read: when whites and competents are in charge.
N.O. had an incompetent Mayor and Louisiana an incompetent Governor. Both sat on their buts, missed and contradicted each others evacuation calls, had buses sitting idle, kept the Red Cross from supplying aid, nor did they mobilize in numbers the Louisiana National Guard directly and exclusively under their command.
An expensive and painful case of on the job training.

I'm waiting to hear the comparisons to this storm and how they PROVE Bush hesitated to help New Orleans cause they were black.

You know the race-baiters aren't going to let this opportunity slip by.

I couldn't have said it better - someone remind this dimbulb Reid that this is how Texas prepares for a Hurricane. Of course, I imagine people in Texas don't sit around waiting for the government to rescue them, either. I'm sure there are people who need the assistance (school buses, etc.) but at least their leaders know to have them ready.

I hope the New Orleans residents in Texas and the Astrodome see what happens when local and state leaders have a plan, and genuinely DO care about the safety and security of their citizens. My guess is there will be NO looting of Galveston or Houston. (And I hope the transplanted New Orleaneans, who have gone through so much already, know that the Texans will make sure that they are as safe and secure as if they were their own).

"GW took responsibility for the failures of Katrina."

I just have to take issue with this statement .. GW did not take that responsibility - what he said was that he took responsibility for the FEDERAL portion only. The Governor and the Mayor have yet to really acknowledge THEIR HUGE MISTAKES.

I think I could save the government a lot of money if they ask me on the commission. The reason why Texas is ready is that they have comptent leaders running the state, where as LA has imcomptent leadership..... Nuff Said......

In all honesty, this dates to before President Bushs stint as governor. Even before the Democratic lady that preceded him. I can't remember a time when the citizens of the gulf coast didn't pick up and move their butt's inland at the sight of a hurricane. Or even that public shelters were not available when they arrived.

I had an Uncle in Port Lavaca, whom we saw often during Hurricane season. He said, "I could probably handle the water, but it's them dam# rattlesnakes coming out of the salt grass swamps I can't handle."

As a Public Works employee for a small community near San Antonio, (now Retired) we had about two disaster drills a year. Hurricanes, tornados, floods, airplane crashes, even nuclear terror strikes. These drills were scheduled at unannounced, some at inconvenient times, even weekday evenings after everyone went home.

Our water system, fire, and police depts all have their own diesel generators to provide power when the lines are down. Shelters have been designated and are stocked with basics.

The only difference I see since katrina is everyone walking on eggs because of the State and city locals in La. going FUBAR.

Everyone knows what to do and how to do it. They are just doing it earlier than usual due to all eyes being on them. Nervous making don't cha know.

I believe Carla in 61 was as big as Rita. What amazes me is that Camille (in 68 I think) which came in across Pass Cristian was not a bigger object lesson to the NOLA area.

Reid wants to handicap the Texans, so that at least as many people are in trouble, percentage wise that is, as were in NO. Its only fair! Maybe by inverted race quotas - lots of whites in this one, like 90% or so. Just makes sense to the DUmmies.
