Wexler Blasts Republicans for Putting Conditions on Katrina Rebuilding Funds

Tax Cut Repeals Should be on the Table before Cuts in Spending

(Washington, D.C.) - Today, Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) questioned the commitment of Congressional Republicans to Katrina recovery efforts after GOP leaders expressed consternation and concerns about the cost of rebuilding Gulf Coast communities. GOP leaders "claim" they are not arguing with President Bush's pledge to pay for recovery efforts, yet they are calling for at least $500 billion in spending cuts over the next 10 years in order to compensate for hurricane recovery costs - cutting funding where it is needed most, while excluding a possible tax increase. Wexler believes that the Republican leadership should put President Bush's trillion dollar tax cuts on the table in order to pay for Katrina recovery efforts rather than cut funding to vital domestic programs. Continuing a trend of fiscal irresponsibility and rising deficits, GOP leaders have yet to propose rescinding reckless tax cuts for the wealthiest of Americans and have written a blank check to fund the Iraq war indefinitely - costing tax-payers billions. Yet, as our nation works to rebuild the Gulf Coast, Republican leaders would rather shortchange our nation's obligation to help the victims of Katrina.

"Hurricane Katrina left a 90,000 square-mile footprint of disaster along the Gulf Coast. Over a thousand people were killed and millions more are left without homes; and yet, Republicans in Congress are now questioning the cost of helping these Americans in their greatest time of need. When it came to giving tax cuts to wealthy Americans or spending billions for the Iraq war, there were no questions asked and no accountability for wasteful spending. It is unconscionable that the same Republicans who gave President Bush a blank check to rebuild Iraq are now balking at money to rebuild New Orleans and Gulf State communities," Wexler said.

You forgot cut defense spending, but Wexler didn't.

Yep..methinks he is setting himself up for a national run for the white house or sending out trial balloons for Hillary...she needs FLA to win and he could give it to her if he pushed enough of the condo vote out.

Bush should propose further tax cuts to RAISE revenue. Let's have a debate about the budgeting tomfoolery that's based on false assumptions.

Bob Wexler won't call for a tax increase. Now who's the demagogue here?

This coming from the Congressman of the area in Florida that was never hit by any hurricanes last year, but received monies to cover damages and funerals! What a whiner!

It's always funny when the "whiner" and Weiner get together. It's a whinerweiner!

Not likely, considering her opinion of Jews.

Doesn't Wexler understand that the GOP and people like us can't accomplish our goal of killing poor black people if we just hand over money?

What a numbskull he is. Has he ever wondered why we invented Hurricane Katrina in the first place? Or why we made Hurricane Rita to finish the job? Doesn't he know anything?

Well, they could be honorably accommodated - let us institute a special tax on the dims, to be individually assessed in direct proportion to the amount of harm, loss and damage any given dim is causing, actually or potentially. Hillary's tax bill would be astronomical.
